View Full Version : Walking My Welsh Corki

I take my Welsh Corgi, Frodo, for a walk around Somerville, Massachusetts.
------
2 Twentysomethings:
She: Oh, look. A Welsh Corki!
He: Yeah, huh, cute.
------
2 Women, Mid-Sixties:
Woman 1: Oh, how cute. A Welsh Corki.
Woman 2: Not 'Corki', 'Corgi'. You're thinking of that retahted kid on that TV show.
Woman 1: Oh yeah. 'CorGEE'. (Laughs) I said 'Corki'. Isn't that funny?
Woman 2: Yeah, you're funny.
------
2 Women, Late Thirties:
Woman 1: How adorable.
Woman 2: What a cutie.
Woman 1: You know he looks just like that dog from 'Frasier'.
Woman 2: No he doesn't, you idiot.
Woman 1: No, I guess not.
Woman 2: That's a Jack Russell Terrier. They look nothing alike.
Woman 1: No, I guess they don't.
------
A Man and Wife, 3 kids:
Man: Ooh, a Welsh Corbi.
Wife: How cute. Let the kids see.
(Frodo growls at kids.)
Man: Moving right along...
------
2 Teenagers:
Kid 1: Hey, man, what's in the baggie?
Me: Here, it's yours.
Kid 1: No way, man.
Kid 2: What happened to your dog's legs?
Kid 1: Where's the rest of his legs?
Me: I sold them at the meat market. Times are rough.
Kid 1: Aw, man.
(I walk on.)
Kid 2: Did you see that dog's legs?
Kid 1: Yeah.
-------
Older woman down the street:
(She watches Frodo pee.)
Woman: Sure does take his time, doesn't he?
Me: Yup.
Woman: Doesn't he know it's cold out?
Me: Probably.
Woman: Looks like he's gonna fall over.
Me: Yeah.
-------
Frodo goes up to man in his driveway who looks and sounds like James Gandolfini from 'The Sopranos'. Frodo stands right under his butt and barks. Man jumps.
Man: Whoa! What's this? (He turns.) You barking at me, you little sh!t?! Trying to get my attention, you short fu ck? Come here. (Man pets dog as I crap my jeans.) Man, this is a cute dog. I love dogs. You're a little cutie, ain't ya. Ain't ya?
(Frodo wags his butt happily.)

I love Corgis! Is yours a Pembroke or Cardigan?

Pembroke. Red and white. He's got a white stripe between his eyes. His middle name is Gwynllain (not sure of the spelling) which means "white strip" in Welsh.

Heh, if I'd walked past you, you'd probably overhear an even sillier reaction ;)

All this happened on different walks between Sept and December. People are really talkative here.

And I'm sure you could guarantee me that you wouldn't call him a Welsh Corbi. I mean, what's that all about? lol! :D

He's so cute! People often comment on the shortness of my basset hound's legs. And they often think they're beagles.

My sister had a basset hound that she rescued from the pound. But he had emotional problems (we think he was abused as a pup) and became bitey. Especially with men. They had to give him up for adoption. Sad, really.

OMG, the sopranos guy! What a riot!
CUTE does not say the half of it! Adorable! Now you know the old adage, pets look like their people. So you must be adorable too! :D

Love the Corgi's. Friend of mine growing up had one that would consistantly tear the screen doors off going after the mailman.
Studly lil' dogs. Great stories :snap:

Not so much. My ears are bigger than his.
:D
Jack ~ I don't know what it is about screendoors and Corgis, but Frodo trashed the screendoor at our friends' house to try and get into the yard. Weird stuff.

Our camp bus stopped at everyone's houses to drop us off each day. We stopped at this girl's house and a dog appeared in the picture window, obviously eager to say hi to her. We could only see the dog from the torso up, but it looked like a good sized dog, like a lab or a collie. A parent opened the front door and out flew the dog - with tiny legs! I'd never seen a Corgi before then. The whole bus cracked up. What a perfect Corgi height window they had! :)
Brad, your puppy is so adorable, and I've seen that sweet thing in person too!

That is a funny story. We get that, too. Big head in the window, short dog runs out to greet you. :D
Also, Corgis have a large dog bark. They aren't yippie. Often we will get comments from delivery people saying, 'Wow, sounds like a big dog in there.' But when they see him, they laugh.

Herein lies a problem for me. He can be so cute that sometimes I find I can't correct him for something he does wrong. (Correct him as in showing him his arch nemesis the water spray bottle. That's his cue that he did something wrong.) Like when he's chewing up my Netflix envelopes or standing on the coffeetable eating Ralphie's ice cream, I try to correct him but he just rolls over on his back and starts pawing the air...smiling. It's hard, I tells you.
And when I do correct him, he gives me this downtrodden look that just makes me mourn.
Such a manipulator...

Yes, yes, yes. That is the most DIFFICULT thing about being a furry parent. Scoundrel is notorious for being so very bad followed by so very cute. Bad cat.

Wait, you wanted to punish him? He's obviously perfectly innocent ;)

Even a good dog can get nasty if abused. It's sad, really. We get the newsletter every few months from Basset Rescue, and some dogs are listed as bad with cats or children, or should be a one-dog household or such. The advantage of adopting from the rescue is they have a clue what the dog is like.
As far as the little manipulators are cute... yes, they are. Luckily our two don't get in a *lot* of trouble. They do have the bad habit or two.

abg~ If we get a playmate for Frodo, we're going to a rescue. Totally. :)
On the whole, I think Frodo is spoiled. He's got that 'only child' syndrome. ie. We put his food out and he nonchalantly eats it when he feels like it. He's not overly affectionate. But if Shiloh (our friends' Kelpie) comes over, he eats right away. And he tries to outdo Shiloh with the affectionate kisses...

Yeah, when we had only one dog she'd nibble all day. Now that we have two- neither will leave anything in their bowls.

I had to share a story about Frodo but didn't want to start yet another thread...
I was walking Frodo last night and did not know that someone was following me down the street. (Not in a 'following to mug me' sort of following, but 'just walking behind me' sort of following.) And Frodo, who usually walks way ahead of me, turned and jetted towards this frat boy that was behind me. He barked his head off at him. It was awesome. My little Corgi was protecting me. So cute!

Frodo had another run in with Tony Soprano last night. We walked up to his house and Frodo starts barking at him while "Tony" was picking up trash in his yard.
Tony Soprano:
Hey, it's my little friend. Who you barking at, little sh!t? Huh? Awww, I ate an animal bigger 'n you for lunch. Little fu ck.
:D
