View Full Version : Chris Matthews: Gay Liberals are Suspects for Church Burnings

MATTHEWS: Is there anything in the papers down there where a Baptist church has taken a position on some social issue, gay marriage, something that's hot, where that would have aroused somebody?
ATF AGENT CAVANAUGH: I haven't seen that Chris, but it's very viable because we had an arson at a Unitarian church in rural Virginia, back in the summer, and it was right after the church at a national level had embraced gay members. There was an attack on this church in Staunton (?), Virginia, so things like that can happen.
MATTHEWS: That's why I'm thinking like that because the more liberal churches would drive some people on the right crazy and maybe a more liberal person, who's gay for example, would feel that they've been terrorized by the beliefs of another church too. We don't know.

Gay Liberal Arsonists... Is that what he's saying or am I reading into this?
Let's say for the sake of argument that the arsonist(s) are found and are gay, do they then represent all of us in the gay community?
I don't watch Chris Matthews' show but I've heard of him. He sounds like he's rather extreme...

*Shrug* seems like a reasonable line of discussion. If the churches that have burned are ones that have been vocally anti-gay, then it stands to reason that some militant pro-gay whacko would have a motive.

What seems weird to me is that Matthews inserted 'liberal gays' into the conversation. You know, like we're known arsonists or something. He sounded like he was leading the interview in a certain direction, which op-ed news shows do.

No offense meant to you GC- but now you know how it feels for someone like me to be lumped in with people who bomb abortion clinics or shoot the doctors just because I am a pro-life Christian conservative.

Strangely enough - extremeists are found on all extremities.
I had some friends who were part of "Queer Nation" who had no qualms about conducting disruptive and potentially destructive activities to further their cause.

Interestingly, Chris seems either undetered by or uncomprehending of the ATF agent's statement that the arson motive seems to be anti-gay (i.e., gay-friendly churches burned) rather than liberal-gay-radical (where the burn motive would be gay-marriage-ban-preaching churches).
What a maroon!
Oh, you just had to go make it racial, didn't you?

Except that I think ISM is missing the point- he is referring to another church burning that anti-gay and Matthews is conjecturing that this is the opposite.

Well, then Chris is making a point not unlike the one that Christian fundies tend not to burn and riot to express outrage, whilst Muslim fundies do ... i.e., that gay-friendly churches have been burned (and homophobes are stereotypically violent haters) whilst anti-gay churches have not (and homosexuals are stereotypically peaceful lovers).
Chris is asking whether there have been any church burnings opposing the trend (which is anti-gay arson) and the ATF agent replies negatively. So was Matthews making a back-handed (or, in any event, rather muddled) gay compliment?

There is no proof anywhere that these church burnings have anything to do with race, sexual orientation etc. So why does Matthews out of the blue surmise that it's the fault of gays and liberals? It makes no sense to me. I think he's doing it because he knows he can. It's an easy target. It's easy to pick on the gay community, it's a small community 10% or less of the population. No risk there...
I'm not saying that all gays are saints, but Matthews pulled his statement out of his a$s... He's also on the record as quoting Michael Savage's anti-gay statements about 'Brokeback' on air with Imus:
"The wonderful Michael Savage ... what's he call it? 'Bareback Mounting.' That's his name for the movie."

It's right there in the news story...
Cavanaugh said witnesses "on more than one occasion" have mentioned seeing two white men in a dark SUV near the church fires.
White people are to blame.
I've never been more ashamed.
Everyone of my neighbors knows I'm white. I think I'll go stand in the road and wait for the mob that's surely coming for me. I'd hate for them to burn down my house trying to get to me since I've done so much much work on it.

No real point(thus the ;) )....but if you watch his show regularly you will find that he is mostly an anti-Bush liberal who stings the left every so often just to make it look like he is an objective journalist.....which he is not. :)

Seems like they found who burned those churches.
Three Birmingham college students were arrested and charged Wednesday in connection with a string of Alabama church fires that is described in court papers as a joke that "got out of hand," authorities said.
The students -- Ben Moseley and Russell DeBusk, both 19, and Matthew Lee Cloyd, 20 -- are suspected in nine of the 10 fires last month.

These kids have something seriously wrong in their heads. 1) Setting fire to the first church was "a joke". 2) Setting fire to the other 9 churches was their way of "throwing investigators off the trail. Umm, yeah, repeting a crime over and over so as to give investigators as much chance of finding evidence as possible is a great diversionary tactic. Yikes.
