With the fires in California :( I was looking at pics of burning homes and wondered- what would you save- if you had time- out of your home ahead of a disaster (fire, hurricane, tornado etc)
In a situation where danger is not immediately imminent for me it would be my pets (family obviously :p ) and then photos/videos and a couple of special Disney items- some clothes and important papers (bank info/house papers/ssn's etc)
If I only had moments-I would grab the house papers/photos/videos (all in one place already)- pets, kids and car- and go.
What would you save if you could?

My life
Capt Jack
10-22-2007, 08:29 AM
my dogs
my guitar
my pictures
my a$$
in that order
The cat (I'm presuming that Lani can save herself but if not, her too) and an envelope with important papers that really should be in a safe deposit box somewhere.
I've lost pretty much everything I owned to fire before. It wasn't all that traumatic and in the long run not much of a problem at all.

Katiesue~ yes, how close are you to the danger? I am stressing over the fire coming close to Otay Lakes but so far I am not loading anything up.
I think I will make some cd's of photos I haven't yet and damn, I could fill a car with all of my albums....
Important documents? Hmmpf. I guess I have a few important documents. Mostly bills but they'll just keep coming.
Let us know how you are, please!!!
I am going to plug in the phone to charge it {for some reason, the house phone is acting up}, go and fill up the vehicles, make a list of what we do have that is important. Mostly it is people and the pets. Must check on my friends and neighbors who might need assistance.
And, did I mention some of the family is headed up to Disneyland? So, I'm worried here and now I'm worried about them, too.

I couldn't leave my books! I'd be like that old lady from Fahrenheit 451; standing in the middle of all my books as the house burns down around me….
Seriously though (and in no particular order):
A few of my most valuable books
My computer CPU
Photographs
My ocean liner memorabilia
Important papers
Bill...
I have one really valuable painting that I would take if I had time and room in the car.

Oh!! My books!!! Aw man. I don't know what I'd save. Aw crap. Now I am really thinking and it is depressing. I have to find a letter my dad wrote me while he was in Vietnam, that I would want to save.
Oh, but yes, they say to make sure your cell phones are charged but I just heard they said not to use them if you don't have to.

NA - I wouldn't touch your music. I think the solid wall of CDs you and Euro have is a load-bearing CD wall.

After coercing the cats out from under the bed - probably my laptop first, then if I can remember where I put them, my grandmother's wedding dress and wedding ring set and the doily made from my great-grandfather's wedding shirt. And the family silver. Those are the really big mementos I couldn't replace.

cats
band-aids (for all the claw marks)
dragons (although I'm not really sure what I'd put them in)
important papers (the ones that should be in a safety deposit box)
meds
and then running around like the proverbial chicken trying to grab pictures and other crap.
maybe some spare underwear and a toothbrush

I found the letter from my father, my sons baby blanket and little Piglet, all of our pictures {except the doubles}, my Chris Cornell autographed photos.
The kids came home from Disneyland and I was going to put some of their school artwork in their car but by then the evacuations were lifted.
The kids packed games, movies, systems.
I am so grateful to be safe and so worried about those still in harms way.
I was quite upset at work yesterday. A man came in and when I asked how they managed through the fires he said 'I'm from Seattle and I don't care.' WTF??? He then said 'According to CNN all of California is on fire.' to which I replied 'Well, it practically is'. He 'tsked' and rolled his eyes at me. I quit talking to him for a bit but then I said, 'To us Californians, this really is a lot to deal with.'
I thought later {those GC after thoughts, but, at work I couldn't start an argument with him} we really are almost all on fire, so cal anyways. If you go to the east, where the fire began, just a bit more is desert so that wouldn't burn. The fires were all up the coast, so many, so scary.
That guy more than made me angry, he disappointed me.

And I packed my 50th golden ears and my Walt going through the castle photo. Just in case. And my grandfathers prize pig trophy from the Lassen County Fair from 1925.

Well this is less of a hypothetical for me now. I now can say what I would save in an evacuation. This of course assumes a fair amount of warning/time. Honestly, I really didn't start packing very early. I didn't think Foothill Ranch was at risk. My neighbors across the street helped convince me of that. So I stalled, not wanting to feel silly and overreact. But then, the fire came to the top of the canyon, and I had to leave. I had only a few things at first layed out on the couch, just in case. But when it became more and more real I methodically went through the entire house, opened every cabinet and drawer and saved what I felt could not be replaced or things I would need to just get by for a while.
Here is what I took:
First to evacuate - the bikes. Especially the irreplaceable chrome Harley
Harley-Davidson VRSCB V-Rod
Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Classic
Files/Important Papers
Framed Pictures
Photo Albums
Painting I got in Ecuador
"Ill Repute" painting friend made for me
My more expensive suits
Selection of clothing - Just shoved stuff into bags (it's funny, I was selective enough to leave behind those clothes I didn't like that much. Also didn't save any dress pants)
My Ties (why, I have no idea. Guess I need them to work. Need work for money. Need money to rebuild life if everything burned. Or maybe it was just panic. :) )
Boxes of memories
Small box with all my concert tickets
50th golden mickey ears that we got for free on the actual 50th
Binders with 401k, stock portfolio, Roth IRA information
Small box of pins
A cool chrome art deco-ish hair dryer (Last minute add. I just bought it the day before with NA and Euro and I'll be damned if I was going to give it up already)
A chest full of things from my living room
A drawer or two with items in it
A small Figment statue I got when I was a kid
A model of my Lightning
Window stickers for my cars
My SVT Authenticity certificate for my Lightning
High school and college diplomas
Journals
A hand made pipe from ecuador
My guns
and my trusty swiss army knife...from Switzerland
And of course, my cars:
Saleen S-351 Mustang
Land Rover Range Rover Sport
Ford SVT Lightning
Here is what I almost forgot in the final rush and panic:
My freaking computer (the first thing I intended to save)
Cell phone charger
Here is what I forgot:
External HDD
DVR with all my recorded shows :)

Oh damn...you remind me that I grabbed the sons 6th grade promotion certificate but where oh where are the others diplomas???? YIKES! I think this is a great thread for us all to look at and help us to get things together in any event.
As well as using a shredder to get rid of crap we don't need {over clutter, messes with the mind, makes you not find things, like, diplomas....} as well as cleaning out for the Goodwill or a yardsale.
Like you said about the clothes, really, makes me think that I need to get rid of things I don't use. I thought I'd been doing that but I realize I haven't been honest about a lot of things....
I am glad you are alright...you are alright, right?
