Okay, it's a startup company, a no-name processor, and way over priced so it will probably disappear in this form very quickly, but it's a nifty new toy and a promising step.

www.oqo.com (http://www.oqo.com)

In short, size of a PDA, 1Ghz processor, 20GB hard drive, 256MB RAM, and it runs a standard OS (ships with Windows XP, I don't know if it supports anything else). Not Windows CE or whatever they might be calling the stripped down PDA OS these days. The fully functional version of XP Home or Pro. WiFi, firewire, USB. This thing is pretty loaded.

I've been hearing about this one for a while.
Good idea, but these negatives are enough to keep me away:
- High price
- Slow WiFi (b only) & USB (no 2.0)
- only runs WinXP (I'm an OSX guy, but I'd take linux over Microstuff)

Yup, like I said, this version is doomed to failure. But someone's gotta be first. It's unlikely that this small company will have the resources to follow up quickly with a more functional, more affordable version. If they're smart and lucky, they'll draw up the plans and then get bought up by one of the larger companies (Dell, IBM, Apple, maybe even Microsoft). If they're unlucky, one of those larger companies will beat them to it and use the commodity market to undercut their price and over-match their features, dooming oqo to a penniless footnote.

I'm with you. I love innovation. I think my "early adopter" days are behind me, though. I'll stick with my iBook for now.

Oh totally, I never buy these first-gen geewhiz toys. But I'll gladly marvel at them, and spread the word if it's something I want so that other people buy them and give companies reason to pursue a next generation.

Ever see the the SNL "Apple Post-it Notes" commercial?

I have something like 5th generation version of my Azim and I'm as happy as a clam.

I has a friend with a big screen TV once when we were like 20 (Think 1982) that think was useless!

Do you really WANT to run photoshop on a 3.4"x4.9" screen?

I was going off the website and their claim you can use it as a desktop as well.

I have a feeling that in a decade we'll be hauling around computers like that in our pockets. After all, most of us carry some sort of storage device on ourselves already, whether it's a USB data keychain, an iPod, or flash memory on your camera phone. If/When computers become mass-produced that tiny in the future, we may be expected to bring our computers with us. Dig that!

It would be awesome if they sold that along with a docking station that included your basic IO ports, as well as a DVD drive to load software.

How long til it gets Linux?

Placed in the desktop stand it is a desktop computer, allowing you to connect easily to a variety of peripherals, including full-size keyboards, printers, scanners, and high-resolution monitors. It shifts easily from one mode to the other with no data synchronization required. From their website sounds like they are including something to do just that, now the DVD drive I am not sure about, but I am guessing there would be a way to hook up an external dvd drive.

Cool toy, I had been waiting for this one (http://minipc.vulcan.com/)to come out. I guess there will be plenty of competition, fo rthis type of device.

I should check and see if they need beta testers for their products.

Not long. Rumor has it that they will be releasing Linux drivers for the hardware.
