Nifty proof of concept toy
Okay, it's a startup company, a no-name processor, and way over priced so it will probably disappear in this form very quickly, but it's a nifty new toy and a promising step.
www.oqo.com In short, size of a PDA, 1Ghz processor, 20GB hard drive, 256MB RAM, and it runs a standard OS (ships with Windows XP, I don't know if it supports anything else). Not Windows CE or whatever they might be calling the stripped down PDA OS these days. The fully functional version of XP Home or Pro. WiFi, firewire, USB. This thing is pretty loaded.

I've been hearing about this one for a while.
Good idea, but these negatives are enough to keep me away: - High price - Slow WiFi (b only) & USB (no 2.0) - only runs WinXP (I'm an OSX guy, but I'd take linux over Microstuff) cnet review here engadget "review" - tons of pictures

Yup, like I said, this version is doomed to failure. But someone's gotta be first. It's unlikely that this small company will have the resources to follow up quickly with a more functional, more affordable version. If they're smart and lucky, they'll draw up the plans and then get bought up by one of the larger companies (Dell, IBM, Apple, maybe even Microsoft). If they're unlucky, one of those larger companies will beat them to it and use the commodity market to undercut their price and over-match their features, dooming oqo to a penniless footnote.

GD -
I'm with you. I love innovation. I think my "early adopter" days are behind me, though. I'll stick with my iBook for now. ![]() ![]()

Oh totally, I never buy these first-gen geewhiz toys. But I'll gladly marvel at them, and spread the word if it's something I want so that other people buy them and give companies reason to pursue a next generation.
Ever see the the SNL "Apple Post-it Notes" commercial?

Do you really WANT to run photoshop on a 3.4"x4.9" screen?
