So.....what if we have an earthquake while we're up there? We ride it and talk about it for hours on end
What if it snows? We'll probably be cold
What if a bunch of snow melts and the river floods the whole canyon and we're trapped? Then we're cold AND screwed
What if the Scientologists decide that June 4th-10th is the dates for the Annual Scientology Camping Trip to Kings Canyon?I checked with Tom and he assured me it won't happen.
What if I decide to start drinking?I'll stop you
What if Cindy starts her period and we don't have any tampons and the store is closed? We'll hand her a roll of toilet paper and tell her to improvise
What if someone "falls" into the rushing river? We won't let you push Cindy into the river if her period starts and we don't have any tampons and the store is closed.
What if we forget to pack clothes? Then it will be "Naked Camp Swank"
What if I don't bring poop bags with me?You will have a rough time cleaning up after Thurston (or Chris, depending on who the bags were intended for)
What if the squirrels band together and attack? We're screwed
What if someone get bubonic plague from a squirrel bite? They're screwed
What if Al Qaeda flies a plane into Muir's Pulpit?Muir's Pulpit will probably be screwed
What if there's an Alien Abduction? Who would they take?Probably not Cindy if her period starts and we don't have any tampons and the store is closed.
What if the country is placed in a state of marshal law?We probably won't go
What if we only have white wine and we're serving red meat?We have white wine with red meat
What if our cell phones won't work (they won't).We won't make (or receive) cell phone calls
What if there's a power failure and all of the ice cream in the general store melts? There won't be any ice cream at the general store
What if we don't have exact change for the shower? We'll stink
What if Chris finds himself aroused by Kevy's Black Dick?I would probably invite him back to out tent
What if it turns out that Kevy's black dick isn't really black but a darn purple? It's actually more of a dark brown
What if NirvanaMan stays sober the entire weekend?Yeah, that won't happen
What if we get crabs? We get some bread crumbs, Creole seasonings, mayonnaise, and an egg and make crab cakes
What if there's no toilet paper? Then Cindy is screwed if her period starts and we don't have any tampons and the store is closed.
What if there's an accident on the 5 and none of us can get there? It will be a pretty crappy weekend. And some people might be injured (or even killed) in the accident
What if the campsite has been turned into a development of luxury condos? Some people will have very nice condos
What if a bear sh!ts in the communal kitchen? We clean it up
What if a tree falls in the forest and there's no one there to hear it?We clean it up
(Thanks to Chris to his input and inspiration.)(Hopefully he said "You're Welcome")

Okay, I have a question. About camping in general, not this trip persay.
In planning for our housekeeping camp trip, the hubster offered to bring a bottle of wine. I don't like wine but my mind wandered to other drinks.
But then I thought of me, a lightweight, after drinking and sleeping in a tent that has a shower curtain as a door....how do you guys feel about that and the bears?
I have a problem with bears. Problem as in fear. I was happy to get a riverside tent but then I thought that the bear probably like to go to the river for water??????
I'll probably sleep quite lightly...
Anyone have any ideas/help/stories?
Or is this subject taboo?
innerSpaceman
04-28-2008, 09:51 PM
Yes, this subject is taboo. Black Dicks on White Men is perfectly fine though.
MouseWife
04-28-2008, 09:59 PM
Well, I dunno. I think that people are more curious about the BD on WM and willing to talk it up.
Bears I think make people soooo nervous!!
Capt Jack
04-28-2008, 10:16 PM
follow the rules they give you when you arrive and you shouldnt have a problem. no food in the tents, use the bear boxes, no trash left around etc.
in all the years Ive been camping Ive seen one, ever. I saw their tracks and could hear them off and on, but never eye to eye. and even it was miles from camp and ran when it spotted us.
worry more about running out of something you need (tp, water etc), as its far more likely. :)
Morrigoon
04-28-2008, 11:33 PM
Everything scented in the bear box (this includes soap, cosmetics, etc.)
Not Afraid
04-28-2008, 11:50 PM
EVERYTHING scented in the bair box - even thing you think smell bad. Sun tan lotion, food or drink, toothpaste, lip stick or chapstick - all of it needs to go into the bear box.
You may see a bear but I've seen more bears in the day time than in the night time. However, don't leave a bag of Dorritos next to your camp table or you'll be SURE to see a bear in the night. We did at Sequoia.
If you feel unsafe about bears, carry some sort of noise maker with you at all times. Banging pots and pans together is a good way to scare them off. Also, don't run and make yourself as large as possible.
Morrigoon
04-28-2008, 11:55 PM

Thank you, all of you, for your tips!!
It is that eye to eye, Capt Jack, that has me shaking! But, I will follow those rules and thanks NA, I will find something noisy to keep by me at all times!!
We will only be two people, so no group!!
I thought of bringing my sis and her two kids but those kids are snack eating machines and I don't think they would understand the rules.
I tell ya, going with kids, going without kids, I think it will be a bit more relaxed, no? I always worried about the kids falling behind and the fear of mountain lions.
Again, thanks you guys!
As for the food, on this trip I think we are not going to take too much. Being mothers day, I am expecting a nice dinner at the Mountain Room....
{not that I deserve it for abandoning my kids on mothers day!! I feel sooo bad about that...}

ROTFLMAO!!! The Hubster always says this to me. He is way faster and it being only the two of us....
But, I can carry a walking stick and whack him with it, if need be. ;)
A question about smells. I have an inflatable bed but I wonder if it will smell too whatever {plastic-y, I don't know}, any thoughts about that? It is brand spankin' new.
And, along this thread, if we do join, it would be for only two nights. I checked the lists on the wiki and it says we need a stove. Does everyone need a stove or would we be joining up on a team and thus not need one? I know the Hubster would LOVE to go and buy everything but I'd rather not buy things we don't absolutely need.
Oh, and, we would be sharing a spot with someone else at this point, right? I am soooo sorry because I know y'all have been through all of this but...
Do two tents fit on one spot and two cars also?
If anyone remembers about housekeeping camp, because I can't, are we able to park outside our unit???? I was hoping that for once we won't have to lug our crap a long way to our lodging.
Thanks you guys and sorry for all of the late questions.....
Morrigoon
04-29-2008, 09:49 AM
Huh? Are we still talking just about housekeeping camp, or is the stove question about Swankamping?
At this point lots of people have stoves, but to be fair, you can get a 2-burner one for $20 at Walmart (Ozark Trail brand... the Coleman one is $40)
Not Afraid
04-29-2008, 09:53 AM
I think we have plenty of stoves if you're just going to join us for a few days.
2 cars per site, mo more than 6 people per site. Them's the rules of the campground. However, I don't think we will have any issues.
MouseWife
04-29-2008, 09:58 AM
Hey Morri! Mostly talking about Kings Canyon but curious if anyone knows that about Housekeeping camp {I think a few here have stayed there}.
Eh, that isn't bad, and, that sounds like pretty much all we'd need, right?
NA, oh, true, we would only be there a couple of nights, if he can swing it. Contributing would have to be worked out, so, I hope he finds out for sure soon.
It sounds like we could fit in somewhere, we would have one car, and, I highly doubt anyone would join us.
It all sounds really interesting and I hopefully can let you guys know soon.
I'll remind him to check his calendar today.......

Oh, and, we would be sharing a spot with someone else at this point, right? I am soooo sorry because I know y'all have been through all of this but...We've slept on brand new air mattresses and have had no problems with them smell wise. But my wife always brings linens to put on the air mattress (bottom sheet, top sheet) and we use two sleeping bags: one right on top of the air mattress under the fitted sheet and one on top as a blanket.
And as far as joining the Camp Swank 2008 excursion, since we are using the "First Come, First Served" plan, there should be no problem joining at this point. I suspect there will probably be some who are currently planning on going who will drop out (no one in particular: just the law of averages).
Capt Jack
04-29-2008, 10:16 AM
and if youre really worried about the smell from the matress, just soap and water it down real good and air it before coming. shouldnt be an issue.
as far as joining, please do. the more the merrier

Are any kids coming? I doubt if my son would come, but, I will offer it up to him.I don't know if we ever officially declared it, but I know that last year's Camp Swank was adults only (as in that is how it ended up, not a beforehand declaration). Based on some of the proclivities (not just the appearance of the mythical BBD [which will NOT be happening this year]), it might be safer to keep it that way.
Personally, I wouldn't object to kiddies being around, but I will defer to others' opinions.

I mean, I'm no one to forbid it as it was never officially declared adults only, but I'm not sure what you'd want to expose your child to. The martinis are only the beginning

Just got something interesting - Walmart has a fleece sleeping bag, but it's not the big thick stuffed sleeping bag like you're used to seeing. It's a fleece blanket with a zipper, basically, so it rolls up really small. I'm thinking it might make a good internal sleeping bag to go under a blanket. $10.

We did pick the Ozark one up at Wal-Mart. Thanks! I think it is pretty cool and actually, probably a very good thing to have in case of an emergency.
We also saw those fleece like sleeping bags, but, couldn't figure if they could be joined so we are just bringing our bedding.
Wonderful finds at REI!! I think I am going to hold off on a tent until I am sure I really want to 'camp'. I'll also know better if I can handle leaving my son as I've never left him for two nights and never quite a distance. We usually just go up to L.A. or the mountains for a night.
There are some issues going on so now I am concerned about overdoing the fun stuff Hubster and I have planned.

Is it close enough to the date to start thinking about planning again?
So, for some reason I thought the plan was to arrive Thursday (except for those that are arriving later) and leave Monday (except for those that are leaving earlier). Those were the days I put in for time off. But now that I look closer at the wiki, it looks like leaving on Sunday is the plan.
Well, we planned to stay until Monday, so we may just do that either way. If anyone else sticks around, we'll welcome the company. If not, maybe we'll take off late Sunday and have Monday to recover or maybe we'll just hang out, just the two of us.
Either way, I'm getting excited. Bought a lantern today (decided to stick with propane instead of L.E.D. Just easier to deal with a single fuel source than worry about stocking gas AND batteries). Still deciding whether to buy a stove or just bum time on someone else's (being there alone on Sunday night might force our hand, unless we just want to do a campfire dinner/breakfast).
Got the tent set up for practice over the weekend. The thing's HUGE, should be awesome.
Yup, I'm at the point where I'm going to be constantly making mental lists and browsing camping sections at stores. I think we're pretty well stocked, but ya' never know...

Capt Jack
05-12-2008, 03:59 PM
yeah, I'd planned on staying sunday night as well and rolling back home monday. Ive snagged a couple extra days on both ends, so its all good
as far as the stove, I'll be bringing my two burner along in any case (along with various cookwares, pots pans etc) and youre more than welcome (as is anyone in attendance that needs it) to use it to your hearts content. Ive also extra cans of fuel as we never even went through a single one during our stay (thats with one full-on breakfast and coffee every morning), so theres plenty as far as that goes.
firewood however, did tend to burn down rather quickly, so might want to bring a spare load of that...although Im considering the fake logs for just doing the campfire thing. easy light and long burn + lighter load. not sure on any regs or concerns as far as those go.
innerSpaceman
05-12-2008, 04:07 PM
Yes, it means staying Sunday night.
Last Year, we paid for the last (extra) night's camping just so we wouldn't have to bug out by noon. Hahaha, we barely beat the sun in finally leaving camp. But we had an activity planned that day which we won't on Monday.
HOWEVER: And not to seek lightning striking twice ... one of the best meals and best times of last year's Swank Camp was Garbage Eggs Breakfast and Gluttonous Bacon Fest ... where we threw almost every leftover foodstuff into omelettes and cooked up 90% of the literally pounds of bacon that were brought to the Sierras by the swankers.
We could eat the bacon at any time, but Garbage Eggs and the relaxed feeling of nothing particular to do was inimitable and fantastic, and can only be done on the last morning.
You won't get that feeling if you have to bug out by noon. I'd like to bug out by 2 or 3, and I wouldn't mind paying the extra night for that luxury.

NM and EH may need one of those extra tents then.
And, can you keep the noise down while you're reconnecting? ;)
If we don't purchase a tent over the weekend, we very well might. I'll let you know. :)

If I do drive up early saturday morning - is there anyone who would like a ride? Also, if there is no job waiting for me on Monday, I thought about staying an extra day past the "norm."
Any thoughts?

At this point, my option is to leave anytime after Friday after work (probably around 5PM), but I will have to leave Sunday in time to get to work on Monday.

My thought - If there is someway of getting back with someone who leaves Sunday and I wonder if somehow getting near me (Metro? Universal?) because I'im in South East Ventura County.
Idea - Meet at Metro Universal in early AM saturday - go from there.

So it looks like I will be going for all four days.
Can I catch a ride with anyone on Thursday?
I can chip in for gas.

I thought you were driving up with me, G.C.?
Gas would be free. I'm driving up whether you ride with me or not, so I don't see the need to make a passenger chip in.
That's the upside. The downside is that we'd be leaving at 4am Thursday morning!!
I'll definitely be doing a solo road trip that weekend. It will begin with your place as the penciled in destination but no guarantees that I'll make it (on solo road trips -- and even some with Lani -- I have a habit of saying "ooh, I wonder where that 1-lane road goes"). If I do it will likely be later on Saturday and I'll play it by ear how much time I spend though I'll definitely be moving out late morning Sunday.

Oy.
Yes, I forgot we made plans already.
It's been a funky couple of days for me.

Well, if you would like to leave a bit later than 4 am and have a lively little dog to entertain you on the way up, you can come with me. I see absolutely no reason to get up at 4 am.

Oh, I'm not getting up at four a.m. I'm leaving at four a.m., after getting up at three.
But that's been my plan since I had to adapt to going solo ... which took the winds out of my Overnight-in-Fresno sails. That's an option if I have a ride buddy.
Either way, my goal is to get to Kings Canyon around noonish. I want the best shot at cool campsites. I believe the Cadaverous Delights are shooting for a noon arrival, too. That's good. Not everyone needs to get there early ... but it's nice to have a few pioneers to hunt for good sites.

We too will be beginning our journey in the wee hours, it's kinda tradition. On our first King's Canyon trip together we got antsy so we just got in the car at around 3AM after staying up way too late watching terrible movies. Turned out to be a great decision as it meant getting out of SoCal before any traffic and getting through the central valley and even making camp before the worst heat of the day, leaving us a long full day.
I'm going to guess our passenger space will be taken by stuff, otherwise we'd offer a ride as well.

I'll be heading down for the weekend following the conclusion of the family camping trip. Not sure how it's going to work because I think we'll be having lunch with my dad on Friday, and then I'll be heading down. I haven't sorted out this whole arriving at night thing, but I'm sure I'll survive :)
I don't really have a team any more (Sohrshah is not able to make it) so I took us off the meal thing. However, if people like the weenie roast idea (and presuming nobody else grabs that Saturday night spot), I could still bring stuff (albeit a less elaborate meal than I was planning when there were team mates).
Bring your skewers/campfire forks!
Capt Jack

I'll gladly be a stand in/go-fer/assistant on your team for that meal if you like. I'd hate to abandon ship on the full-on weenie roast due to a missing comrade.

The main reason I won't leave at 4 am is that I would fall asleep while driving. I get mesmerized and sleepy by the road VERY easily when alone. Thurston can't drive, I don't want to kill us both.

Oi. Don't know about the cojoining. I mean, it would make it easier for us (especially since Giant Weinie Roast was Gemini Cricket's idea for a meal before he knew you were doing it). I'll have to ask him. But that would leave Friday Breakfast unaccounted for. (Though we could still do cereal and milk!)

Okay, so who is actually going at this point? Checking the Wiki (after making one small adjustment), I see the following teams:
Church of the Black Junk: Disneyphile, Frodo Potter, GusGus, Kevy Baby
Team Discovery Channel: innerSpaceman, Gemini Cricket
Nearly Naked Hedonists: €uromeinke, Not Afraid, katiesue, Captain Jack
Camp Sausages and Muffins: Ghoulish Delight, Cadaverous Pallor, NirvanaMan, EH1812I am not sure which team Morrigoon is on, but it would appear that Team Discovery Channel would work.
I remember more people: who has dropped out (or are not reporting)?

I'm coming in sometime Friday I think, but I still need to get in touch with my brother about the plans for the family camping trip to figure that out. Since I'm a single, I'm pretty flexible as to where I end up.

I wish Gemini Cricket would check this thread. I hate having to discuss things here, then PM him, then relay his input here, blah, blah, blah. So I'm not doing it.
I'm making unilateral decisions of absolutely no importance. Team Discovery Channel will gladly join forces with the lone survivor of Team Where the Rum Has Gone for the Giant Weinie Roast of Big Black Dicks and Other Sausages ... AND will accept katiesue's kind offer of assistance for Friday Breakfast.
I have no idea what to do for Friday Breakfast, but Borneio had planned to steal an idea from Alex (both of whom will likely be showing up in some limited fashion) for a customize-your-own omelette bar. That sounds logistically daunting, but fun.
I defer, however, to katiesue ... Mistress of Amazing Breakfasts, for concepts that will both work and be delicious!
