I have an issue on a box running Vista. I have an update called “Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB948109)” that keeps refusing to install. I keep getting an error Code 735D. I have looked the problem up on the MS web site as well as the interwebs in general, but couldn’t really find a solid answer.
Do I need this update (my computer is used as our "server" by making the Shared Docs folder our file repository)?
If I DON’T need it, how do I kill it?

This might be a dumb question but...
Are you running SQL Server 2005 on your home PC? I do but I'm strange that way.....
It is not something that comes with Vista (even if you are sharing).

Throw it out and buy a Mac. ;)

Install XP.
Seriously, if you didn't consciously install SQL Server then I'm not sure why it's trying to update.
This is what I do some days at work:
Select * from dbo.coworkers where coworkers = 'smrt'
0 results returned.

Try this (http://blog.jemm.net/2008/07/09/sql-server-2005-security-update-kb948109-fails-to-install-with-error-code-0x773f-how-to-fix/) link - I know the error you're getting isn't exactly the same, but it seems that people are getting several variants of errors, but this is working.

If that doesn't work, and you aren't running sql server, you can tell windows to ignore the update.
1) Open the start menu and type "Windows Update" in the search box, run Windows Update.
2) Click "View Available Updates" under "Install Updates"
3) Find the offending update and uncheck the box next to it.
4) Right click on it and select "Hide Update"
5) Close the window.
It'll stop bugging you.
If after doing that, should you want to install the update afterall, just run the "Windows Update" again and on the left side click "Restore Hidden Updates" and it'll become available again.

To the best of my knowledge, I am not running SQLS2. I assume that it is an OS? (Sorry - I am a PC neophyte)
Throw it out and buy a Mac. ;)Would love to! (I use a Mac at home.)
Install XP.Boss wanted to upgrade to Vista because more than 5 people can connect to Shared Docs at a time (see OP).

It's a database engine. It may very well be running. Hit "ctrl-shift-esc" to bring up the task manager then click on "Processes". Look for processes named something like "sql server".

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277
Follow the steps under "Enable Remote Connections..."etc. and try running the update again.

If it's running, that likely means something needs it, I wouldn't suggest killing it.

Update
In going through this, I have discovered that it is Act 7 that needs the SQL Server. This is amusing because after a brief try of Act 7, I reverted back to Act 5 (e.g. I don't use Act 7 any more). But to not foul things up, I went ahead with still trying to fix this.
I started with the link in CoasterMatt's post and DL'ed the update manually from MS (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=4c9851cc-2c4c-4190-872c-84993a7623b7&DisplayLang=en). There were three to chose from on the MS site and naturally it was the third one that was for my computer (they are all "SQLServer2005-KB948109-XXXX-ENU", and the three variations are "IA64", "x64", and "x86" - "x86" is the one that worked).
I went through the necessary steps for the hot fix and it installed correctly. I rebooted the computer and when it came back up, Windows Update STILL said it wanted to install the update. I double checked and indeed, it was the KB948109 update that Windows Update is looking for. While I did reboot after the install, I am going to try rebooting a couple of times when no one is in the office (since my computer serves as the office "server," it is very disruptive to the office to have me rebooting).
So, I have hidden the update for now. When our wandering IT guy comes in again (we only bring him in on an "as needed" basis), I will ask him about this.
Thanks again to all that offered assistance!

I'm seriously thinking about dumping Windows completely and switching to Linux.
Ubuntu looks interesting.
I've used Ubuntu, if you don't do much with your computer it's good.
I have Vista, love the hell out of it on the work computer. Never a problem, and seamless with Office 07 and Adobe everything.
I'm still glad I threw out my mac.

Ubuntu runs Firefox and OpenOffice.org (a near perfect copy of MS Office).
