I need to pick your brains about velvet. Do you love? hate?

Well, I need to see Blue Velvet again.

As a fabric, though, I love touching it ... but don't want to own anything made from it.

I think Elvis sort of ruined the velvet industry.

The tactile feeling of velvet kind of oogs me out. So not for me.

I'm with Alex - I don't like how it feels.

mostly I gauge is by what it's been/being used for.

I like it/have used it as a liner for custom storage boxes. gives a nice classy texture.

hate it for interiors on cars regardless of color....(the exception being the back of a hearse)

IMO, it is NEVER TO BE USED AS CANVAS, regardless of the subject

Ive seen some incredible gowns and other costume pieces created from it. for a certain effects, its hard to beat.

its also easy to go overboard with it.

My thoughts are the same as CJ's.

But I do like the tactile experience of velvet (in limited amounts).

When I see the word "velvet" I think:
Elvis
Matador paintings on
and
Underground.

What's the fiber content? I need to know that before I can answer.

I lurve velvet -- particularly silk or vintage flavors. Jewel tones are the best. I own many pieces of clothing, and have made drapes, throws and swags out of the stuff. Yes my old bedroom (before the allergies kicked in) looked like a brothel. :D Now I can't decorate with it as it's a dust magnet, but I still love wearing it!

I'd love a Velvet smoking jacket (but I don't smoke) a'la Willy wonka, except to pay for it, I'd need a Velvet Goldmine....

I LOVE velvet. I have a deep burgundy 1930's gown in velvet that is one of the best pieces of clothing I've ever owned. Deep colors are my favorite but a beautiful champagne color or tawny brown makes the most wonderful upholstery. If I didn't have so much pet hair to deal with, there's be lots of velvet decorating my house.

Oh, linen velvet is divine and looks better and better with age.

Velvet is definitely a turn on. It is my favorite fabric to touch. My only girlfriend back in High School wore a dark purple velvet dress when we went out on dates. Yep I love velvet!

I'm pro-velvet as it's one of those good texture fabrics. Dark colors and jewel tones seem more luminous in velvet so I think that's the way to go. I think also because of it's texture it can make a good contrast with other fabrics.

However, it's hot here right now, so velvet seems a bit oppressive for the current weather.

So any more context on how this hypothetical fabric might be deployed?

Thanks, all. I'm so confused!

My daughters think velvet is ooky. I say they're wrong. The larger implication has to do with what people want to see in a romance novel.

Funny story along those lines....

My neighbour is this somewhat nerdy vegan who works as a researcher at the FDA. One day his doorbell rings, it's the Lady that live across the street. She wants to know if he thinks the dress her 15 Year old daughter wants to wear is acceptable. Standing next to her, is the daughter in a dress with an ulta-sheer top which clearly shows the dress is the only thing she has on. He was so flustered and tongue tied he never got a real answer out but I don't think she was allowed to wear the dress....

I also don't like touching velvet, but I love how it looks.

I like touching suede though. For some people that's a turnoff.

Velvet is rich, luscious and, well, velvety (not to be confused with veveeta, which is not, that's just gross). I think of it best as costume, but I think as NA mentioned, in a real vintage piece of clothing, it would be wonderful.

what is it with moms and 'get a strangers opinion'? I had the same thing done to me in the apt complex I used to live in (albeit not a velvet dress).

"would you let your daughter wear this?" she said

lets just say victoria had no more secrets in that particular dress.

I mumbled and stumbled and dont even recall what I actually said beyond "I dont have a daughter"

I could hear her talking to her underdressed teen as they walked away "did you see his face? you're not wearing this"

In the Steampunk thread (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showthread.php?t=7219), I kinda went overboard posting several beautiful pieces (http://www.loungeoftomorrow.com/LoT/showthread.php?p=229494#post229494) from the Pyramid Collection catalog (http://www.pyramidcollection.com/). Many of them were velvet. This is my favorite one, but I think it is mainly because of the model (in case you are worried, the picture is totally safe for work):

I love wearing velvet. An added bonus- doesn't wrinkle. :) Should be used judiciously, though, as it can be overbearing.
