View Full Version : The LoT Video Jukebox

One of the real cool things about Youtube right now is the phenomenon of people posting videos that use Youtube as a jukebox. Yes there are always people posting standard music videos from now and from back in the day but if you search for a song you have a good chance of either finding a video of a live performance, music video, or just a video with the song. Many people are now taking their record collections and sharing them on sites like this and while the song is playing all you see is the record spinning on the turntable.

So all you swanky LoT'ers I invite you to do a search, put a nickle in the jukebox and share your finds with the commune.

First up, since I have Motown on my mind here is a song on the subsidiary, Gordy, by Lee and the Leopards - Come Into My Palace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K93ezs4CVQ) from 1962.

And now one of the very first songs recorded by Atlanta native, Joe South. From 1958 on the Mercury subsidiary, NRC, here's I'm Snowed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLjmOC7oxV4)

From 1958 on the Flash label is one of my favorites. The bass line is so catchy that I sing it in the shower often. These are The Poets and The Vowels of Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlzbyLisOvo).

This is a real music video in the true sense of the word from a very special musical moment in time. The year is 1985 in London England during a televised concert, featuring Rockabilly legend Carl Perkins. Check out this medley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_1U-zL6heo) played by Rock N' Roll superstars - Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, George Harrison, Dave Edmunds, Lee Rocker, and Roseanne Cash.

I thought this was amusing - David Bowie performs "Space Oddity" at the 1970 Ivor Novello Awards. Pre-glam, pre-Ziggy...pretty much pre-everything. ;)

How about digging some classic Boogie!

Here's Amos Milburn's & Chicken Shack Boogie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GvfIx_-Xm4) from 1956

Speaking of Boogie, here's one of my favorite bands of the modern era, BR5-49 with their version of Tennessee Ernie Ford's Shotgun Boogie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEWyOigSUS4) Definitely has that classic Western Swing feel to it.

Another one of my favorite bands are the Kentucky Headhunters. Here's their rockin' version of The Ballad of Davy Crockett (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7xf-BNkLWUE) Don't forget to put on your coonskin caps (and yes after years of searching I finaly have my own and I am bringing it along next September to Disneyland)!

Okay, all you J-Pop and electronica fans, tell me if you've heard The Girl in Byakkoya (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DMc2EW6Pmkk)! I've been listening to it obsessively. It's from Satoshi Kon's amazing anime feature PAPRIKA. Watch the video, and I bet you will want to add it to your queue right away. The movie is visually breathtaking, goofy and profound, confusing and illuminating, but the music by Susumu Hirasawa is what has gripped me to the core. Soundtrack available on iTunes, but The Girl In Byakkoya is available for legal-free from the composer's website here. (http://www.teslakite.com/freemp3s/e/) (Also, don't miss Susumu's page of free songs entitled "Music Against The Carnage." He created it in protest to the US response to 9/11 and the hideous mistakes made since then. This guy is my new hero.)

Anyway, The Girl In Byakkoya has made me so happy!

Turn down the lights. Grab a partner. It's slow grind time baby!

Here's a real belly rubber, toe curler, and spine tingler. These are The Wheels and "My Hearts Desire" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hASmHrs4d9A) from 1956!

Next up are The Charades and "Please Be My Love Tonight" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqpsEKsYcy8)

Not to be outdone are Jesse Belvin and Eugene Church, as The Cliques with "Girl of My Dream (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Brt0MPKuuS0)"

To round out this set we stay in California to hear the original version of an Elvis classic. Willy & Ruth on the Spark label in 1954 and their recording of Lieber & Stoller's "Love Me" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVMbqdBMk34)

With Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras) being tomorrow I think we should party New Orleans style!

Shirley and Lee get us started with "Let The Good Times Roll" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IREjtd7Jd6o) from 1956!

Here's the flipside of "Sea Cruise" - "Roberta" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5Up-07RvoM) by Frankie Ford (backed by Huey "Piano" Smith and The Clowns).

New Orleans also had DooWop Groups. One of them were The Spiders and their lead singer was the deceased Chuck Carbo. Here's a clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzXVVqxRDVA) of his appearance at the UGHA Hall of Fame show in 2002. In fact you can see my head bobbing in the audience!

The original version of "See You Later Alligator" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K3n0bodrV4) by Swamp Pop artist, Bobby Charles from 1954.

Little Richard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vypwpMuGjQ) wasn't from New Orleans but all of his hits were recorded there.

And we can't leave New Orleans without hearing from Antoine "Fats" Domino (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2eZZBMt1CQ)!

Here's my current Earworm. My early teens found myself listening to Country music. I was digging it because a lot of the music at that point was being infused with blues and Rockabilly undertones. My favorites were Neal McCoy, Dwight Yoakem, the Tractors, Kentucky Headhunters, and this band.

Here's BR5-49 with Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly Nuts) (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xc61c_br5-49-little-ramona_music). A great tune with a retro western-swing sound.
