I wasn't sure where to put this, but here goes. My two lego-crazed pals, Remi and Alyse, built this (with the help of two others) for BrickCon in Seattle this weekend.
Needless to say, I think it's geektacular!

(I didn't include the image of the mouse as it was too big - the picture; not the mouse.)
Hmmm....that keyboard only seems useful to me if you don't know how to type without looking at the keyboard. Without any tactile feedback on my fingers I think I'd end up slowed way down.
As for the mouse we already have trackpads and I hate them, the first thing I do with laptops is seek out a regular mouse to plug in.
But I agree that they'd look cool as part of an Ikea office display, I just doubt that I'd want to actually use them.

Functional and comfy. How rare do those two commingle.
Dress Pant Sweatpants (http://gizmodo.com/5879654/goodbye-sliced-bread-dress-pant-sweatpants-officially-the-greatest-thing-now)
Letting you easily go from the gym (or bed) to work without changing, Betabrand's drab gray dress pants are actually made from comfortable terry cloth. So you can relive your college days when it was ok to leave the dorm wearing pajamas.
http://cache.gizmodo.com/assets/images/4/2012/01/647652c412a7d42c08c85da332baf3e7.jpg
I really don't understand that. First I don't actually find sweatpants to be any more comfortable unless I'm not expecting to be more mobile than watching football from the couch. But the comfort comes from being baggy and loose, not that they're made out of cheap fabric. So if they still fit like regular pants is not that advantage gone?
Two, if I'm going to have to wear a belt to keep them up, that eliminates most of what comfort advantage (when not moving) sweatpants have.
Three, when was the last time you saw dress pants with kneepads built in?
Four, KNEE PADS. Apparently these are designed for male hookers.

Cool, but I suspect somewhat hard to live with. At least for me things like that are almost headache inducing when viewed from angles that are close, but not quite spot on. It's like my brain is short-circuited trying to make things line up.

I agree with Alex. A good trompe l'oeil might be great at someone else's house, but can be maddening at home if it doesn't always work perfectly.
Since this is the first house we've ever owned, I got excited when we first bought it and asked Heather if we could get an Imagineer to design the living room. She shot me down. She is a wise woman.
True, but if it were in my house it is quite possible that there'd be reason to stop in places not good.
(I was thinking that stairwell was in a residential home, but thinking about it more it is probably a gallery.)

Japanese company makes levitating house to prevent structural damage during an earthquake (http://inhabitat.com/japanese-levitating-house-system-could-protect-homes-from-earthquakes/).
I realize this thread is focused on visual beauty, but I think this idea is brilliant.
Interesting idea. I'd be curious how long it can maintain that levitation. 20-30 seconds is a long time to be compressing and blowing air with not no real warning. And if effective, how quickly would it blow the electrical grid to have half the houses in a town suddenly start drawing that much power at exactly the same time.
The picture doesn't show what happens to all the utility connections from the house to the ground. I imagine they can be built with slack but they'd be torquing on the house while it floated and there's a non-zero chance that the part of the house attached to the ground will have moved when it comes back down.
I assume those are all dealt with and not explained in a 300 word article, but they're the questions that come immediately to mind.
And just proves that Carl from Up was ahead of his time.

huh. neat idea. almost a 'why didnt I think of that?'
I'm having trouble deciding if that is good design or just surface clever?
As I think about it, I believe I rarely want to measure all ingredients into a single bowl. With this either you are just constantly adding new stuff to the mix, or you have to weight, empty and clean to weigh another ingredient.
So even if I had this I would probably still want a standalone scale, in which case I don't need this as I accomplish the exact same thing by putting the mixing bowl on my scale.
SzczerbiakManiac
03-22-2012, 02:02 PM
I see your point Alex, but since it has a tare function, I can see myself adapting to adding ingredients in succession.
Yes, it would be useful for that. But I also frequently (when I cook, which isn't frequently) start by measuring out all of the ingredients for something even if they don't all get mixed together immediately.
I don't think it would be possible for more convert entirely to things that can be mixed together at the start.
Plus, I probably wouldn't have been able to weigh my luggage for our Rome trip in that like I was able to do with our food scale (a two week trip with 14 pounds of luggage involved a lot of weighing and trading). And obviously failure of imagination that it doesn't take into account luggage weighing.
katiesue
03-22-2012, 02:15 PM
It's a clever idea but I don't see it as being very practical. We use a kitchen scale a lot, easier to figure out carbs if you measure. That said my fairly cheap kitchen scale has a tare function as well. So we usually measure in whatever she's going to eat it out of. Using this would mean I'd have to wash it and whatever she ate out of.
Plus it says it's European so no ounces - then I'd have to do mental math and that just wouldn't be good.

(a two week trip with 14 pounds of luggage involved a lot of weighing and trading).
How in the hell did you do that? I'm pretty sure my little purse weighs more than that! (Okay not really... maybe half that)

How in the hell did you do that? By being Alex.
I like the bowl since I usually only weigh one ingredient. But I also think it's no big deal to have a separate scale (mine is cheap and fits even in my kitchen) so you can continue to measure after mixing.
Looking it up it was actually 13 pounds. Virgin Atlantic's limit for carry on luggage.
It really wasn't that hard, you just have to be willing to not take everything you might possibly need with you. Rome is a modern place, they have stores and everything. So you don't need to take an umbrella just because it might rain. You don't need to take 4 pairs of shoes.
If you're willing to handwash clothes in your room at night (and by clothes that will dry quickly) you really only need a couple sets. If I recall correctly I packed two shirts, two t-shirts, three pairs of socks, one pairs of shoes, one light jacket, my camera gear (which I believe ended up being about 5 of my 13 pounds), the guide book we were using, some basic toiletries (not many, I'm more than happy with hotel shampoo, soap, and toothpaste, and my Kindle.
Plus the clothes I was wearing when we got on the plane.
And this isn't so much "being Alex" as "being Lani." But traveling with just carry-on isn't really that hard if you put some thought into it and don't bring home with you.

We have a recycle bin right next to the mail slots. 90% of the snail mail I get goes right into the bin rather than cluttering up my office for days.
90% of my mail doesn't even make it into the house. I just put it in the garbarge can next to the mailboxes. 90% of the remaining 10% only comes inside so I can shred the credit card mailings. 90% of the reamining 1% only comes inside because I figure Lani should be the one to throw it away instead of me.

I can't believe that there's a Frank Lloyd Wright on there, though the update says it has since been restored.
Also - is that the way to the LoT Commune?

As children, they spent summers at the house. Unable to afford the upkeep, they sold the house to a buyer who promised to preserve it, who then promptly put it back on the market.Just like that, the house designed by one of the biggest names in architecture for his own family's use is just another liability to be sold and torn down.

I feel bad that the realtor's staging of the house makes me just assume that the current owners are douches.

pity. I think it could be made comfortable.

http://www.thinkgeek.com/images/products/frontsquare/f2c9_bluetooth_handset_gloves_inuse.jpgThis is great. How about Uhura gloves, where the speaker is in the middle finger tip and the mic in lower palm? Or better, actual implants.
I don't want implants for that kind of thing.
