Thanks you guys! You all rock. I was so nervous last night... until I stepped on stage...
:)
Last night was a train wreck. But a fun one. There were about five instances where we had to hold for costume shenanigans. Two of those were mine. Here's how my changes go:
Act I:
Tribe hippie ---> riot police officer ---> Margaret Mead ---> Tribe hippie.
Act II:
Tribe hippie ---> George Washington's Soldier ---> Army Sergeant ---> Tribe Hippie ---> Tribe hippie (winter coat)
The only one I have lots of time for is MM. But even the 15 min I have seems like 15 seconds.
I was thinking about this the other night. Last year made my 20th year doing theatre. That's a pretty cool thing.

Opening Night was supremely fantastic. Such a great audience and a super response to Margaret Mead. The audience loved her.
:)
We got a standing ovation and the after show party was crazy fun. There was even a pants dropping competition that I have no idea how it started but it was pretty hysterical.
The parental units came to the show without prior knowledge of who I would be portraying in the show. Hee hee. I told them I was in the Tribe and that's about it. They were stunned by Ms. Mead and my dad said he had to cover his eyes when I flashed the audience. lol!
So, "Hair" is open. One show tonight, two on Saturday, one on Sunday and then I get to rest until Thursday. I've never looked forward to a Monday before in all my life...

Bad News and Good News:
Two pretty bad reviews for our show. Just sent out a pep talk email to the Tribe. I'm explaining to them that these are just two opinions from two people. The overwhelming response from the audiences and our one week extension proves that they are in the minority.
We were on the morning news today performing 4 songs from the show. It's great advertising for the show. There's nothing like getting up at 5am and belting a song, I tells ya.

So conflicted.
The review said that the theatre was committing a crime against performing arts by not doing the nude scene.
On one hand, I agree. I did fight for the nude scene before we started. But the board and the producers all agreed that they shouldn't do it. And it's still a very powerful production.
But I did tell them some would not like the fact that we aren't doing it. But the reviewer is the first to complain about it so far...
innerSpaceman
03-09-2010, 01:09 PM
Alas, apart from two or three lasting songs, the nude scene is what is most associated with the piece this far from 1967. I only learned it was not part of the originally-mounted production in the last few weeks, due to Brad's production (and sorry to use the word "mounted" in a paragraph about a nude scene).
So I have to say, in the minds of many, not doing the nude scene smacks of High School musical and puts a potential taint of less-than-professional on it.
To me, it's small beans (nothing meant by that in relation to a nude scene), and the most minor of quibbles. But I can see why some see it as a cowardly move worthy of some derision.

Now Twitter Night was interesting... There were a lot of people who came for it, but the people of the Twittersphere that were in the house were too distracted by what was going on onstage to tweet about it during the show. So it was more of a spreading the word after the fact thing than a play by play thing. It was quite odd to see so many glowing blue faces in the house.

So, even though "Hair" is still not over and we're hoping to extend for 2 more weeks... The next 2 things are already on the table for me: a fundraiser dinner for Manoa Valley Theatre and one for Diamond Head Theatre. At MVT I will be a hippie and the tribe will be entertaining guests at a formal dinner. At DHT I will be playing a mafia godfather for a murder mystery fund raiser that they are having.
The DHT fund raiser is going to be tough. 45 page script for a one night only performance. Oy vey. Lots of dialogue. I found out that as I get older, it takes me longer to memorize things. Yuck.

So the director for "Hair" is on to his next project, "Guys and Dolls" at another theatre. Because rehearsals are pretty much starting now, he told us that we Hair-ians (which is running until the 4th and may extend further) were not allowed to audition. I get a call last night at 8pm saying he wants us to audition now. I say great. The auditions are tonight. I have no song prepped, no real character in mind yet. But apparently, like a lot of shows here, there aren't enough guys. (I can't complain, that's how I get into so many shows! lol) So, I'm auditioning for Benny Southstreet or Nicely Nicely or Harry the Horse or someone like that tonight. The character is supposed to eat/be hungry all the time and the traditional casting calls for an overweight guy. At my school we cast a beanpole guy which worked as an extra sight gag. Could work for you, or do you think they'd want you in a fat suit?
Our Big Jule was a gag too, played by a girl as a brassy woman, bossing everyone around. My Benny was me in drag...not exactly a sight gag but probably one nonetheless.

The cool thing was that I was up for Nathan Detroit against 1 other guy. I thought that was pretty neat. I would have cast the other guy, too. He looks the part and has done the play before. I talked to the director after and said I did really well for someone who had one day's notice and had not seen the play before. So, I took that as a compliment.
There's a local play coming up called "Once Upon One Time". It's a local pidgin version of "Into the Woods". I'm thinking that I have a good chance of getting into that. I can do a mean pidgin accent that most people in the theatre community have not heard yet.

Far away angle. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjq-78IBBUU)
Closer. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93ih0CBfsbY)
If you listen, you can hear me. I was near the mic. Which may have been a bad thing. lol.
I thought we did pretty good considering how nervous we were and some of the mics not working and we couldn't hear ourselves (no monitor). Oh well.

Wow, who's the girl? And why is life wasted with her standing so comfortably close to the one man within hailing distance who won't want to sleep with her?
(oh wait, was it an hawaiian theater event? Ok, close to one of the 50 men within hailing distance who won't want to sleep with her.)
(BTW Brad, you look good in black.)

On to the next role. I just got cast in "Crazy for You" over at Diamond Head Theatre. I'm playing Eugene, a British tourist. I dusted off a British accent that is more of a parody of a British accent. Somewhere along the lines of Terry Thomas and just went nuts during the audition. The director loved it. And I love him. And he loves me for loving him and I love him for loving me. And we loooove each other...
He's going to accommodate my schedule for the show I'm currently in. So, there's no break betwixt shows. Which is ok by me. Rehearsals start today, the show I'm in closes on the 15th.
Anyway, new show, new part, different theatre than the last couple of shows with a director who is a good friend.
Yay!

Advice needed:
Neither of my sisters has come to see my current show. One is too self-absorbed to think of anyone but herself, the other is mad because I let it slip to my parents that her girlfriend got a large tattoo on her back. I have told them about the show. I put comp tickets at the box office for them to claim whenever they want. They even have their names down so that their friends can get my cast discount. The only option now is to beg them to come see the show. I'm at a point where I refuse to do that. If they want to come see it, great, if they don't, great. I'm at a point where I don't give a sh!t what they do. But, of course, there are pangs of guilt in me. Should I make more of an effort or should I just say f*ck it and be alright with them not seeing it and saying it's their loss?

I suggest leaving playbills in conspicuous locations with cryptic, passive aggressive, and/or mildly psychotic scribblings on them. e.g. "Reserved for: [sister's name]" on the top. Or "I cut myself hoping she'd feel the pain" in the margins.

I just got off of the phone with tattooed soon-to-be sister-in-law (she works at my Dr's office). I didn't bring it up. I was cheerful, too.
GD ~ Good idea. Maybe I'll take a shot of the audience and Photoshop them in and circulate that. That'll cheese them off.

This last show was not my favorite. In fact, I don't miss it at all. Some of the people I do miss. But I'm feeling guilty that I'm not going through any withdrawals right now like the rest of the cast is. My cast mates have been calling me and each other in quite a depressed state. Normal I suppose. But I'm jumping for joy that the show is over. I mean, it could be that it's because I jumped onto another show during the performance phase of the last one, but in all honesty, I don't think so. Oh well...
On a brighter note, I love love love my new character Lank. He's an asshole.

Hey Brad,
The last time my parents saw me onstage was about six years ago, and then five years before that. They've only come down when I've done major shows (both of these were with the Oregon Symphony). I've given up on friends and family seeing my shows. I won't press, I just let them know what's happening, and that I'd like them to come. I never expect them to. That way, they're not pressured and I'm not disappointed. And it's a pleasant surprise when they show up!

Yes. I think that's sound advice. I'm going to remember that. I'll keep my sisters on my discount list but they're on their own otherwise. My parents have been really interested in coming to my shows (they just looove sharing the spotlight) so they can have my comp tickets.
With this new show, it's very interesting what's going on. I haven't been called for rehearsals until it's absolutely necessary. Which is kind of nice. Instead of me hanging out and watching everyone else, they schedule me when they know I'll be utilized. I like that. For the last two shows, I've been called for rehearsals every night. So for this show, I feel like it's a part-time job instead of a full-time one. In fact, when I hang out to watch the choreographer working with the ensemble (the dancing is fantastic in this show) the director and stage manager always come by and say, 'you don't have to stay, did we forget to tell you? Sorry...' I always tell them I want to stay because I'm truly amazed at how talented the dancers are. Dancing like everyone else does eludes me (I'm a rebel). So when I see people doing it I get intrigued.

Ok. I'm having some anxiety with this show. I'm the villain and in charge of a lot of humor in the show. I'm feeling the pressure. We haven't finished blocking Act II yet and it kinda worries me. We open on the 24th. 2 weeks.

I want to see you bomb ... and leave Hawaii in disgrace ... and have to stow away on a tramp steamer bound for Los Angeles ... only to be discovered in the hold and given a choice between being thrown overboard or being the first mate's cabin boy for the duration.
(That part's to make the story more palatable to you ... I just want you back in L.A.)

So, right around this time (the 1 week before opening mark), I get what I call adrenaline blasts. Like when I'm working or doing non-theatre shenanigans, I think about the play for one second and boom adrenaline shoots all over. A little bit of anxiety, stress and happy anticipation all mixed in one. Today has been adrenaline city for me.

I'm insane.
I just got into another show: "A Christmas Carol". It's a commedia dell'arte take on the Dickens tale. So, I start rehearsals on Monday. So, Mon-Wed "ACC" rehearsals, Thurs-Sun "Crazy For You" performances.
I'm going to be sooooo busy these next couple of months.
AND
"Avenue Q" auditions are mid-December.

And now back to Gemini Cricket's other show currently on the boards (oh my, it's getting hard to keep track of them all). The reviews for "Crazy For You" are in!
Braddoc DeCaires (Lank Hawkins) gives a commanding comic performance as the rough-edged saloon owner who wants the theater to fail. DeCaires has several good bits prior to his big scene with Liz Stone (Irene Roth) where Irene, Bobby's rejected fiancee, abruptly sets her sights on the hapless saloon keeper and reels him in with comic dominatrix style.
