It seems to me that the USA gets the Olympics for more that their share any ways. There are a lot of countries out there. Sure most of them aren't able to host, but many can and should get the chance.

Am I mistaken, or wasn't the 1984 Olympics here in L.A. that last one that turned a profit for the organization or the host city?

No, LA was the first. (actually, L.A. was the first in 1932, about $1 million dollars. No other city after that made a profit until it was back in L.A. in '84)
Seoul, Barcelona, Atlanta and Beijing all made profit. With the caveat that you can probably point to a whole lot of other costs that may or may not outweight he profit on paper, depending on how you interpret things. |
