Rio de Janeiro to host 2016 Olympics
Tonight their gonna party like it's 2016....
I think it's a great choice, I'd much rather go to Rio for the Olympics than Chicago and since by that time I should be an empty nest'er I might even make it.

It'll be great, but man is it going to be tough for the swimmers with all the feathers and sequins attached to their suits.

The farther away from me the Olympics are, the better as far as I'm concerned. So Rio was a good choice since I don't think I could stand the jingoism of Olympics in America again. The jingoism of American athletes in other countries is enough.
I know about three dozen people in Chicago and only one wanted the Olympics (obviously not a representatives sample) so I'm glad for them. |

I'm happy for Rio.
I didn't care if it ended up in Chicago - on one hand it would be good for jobs and the economy, on the other hand we have better things to focus on at the moment. Though with all the Olympic coverage we wouldn't hear how the Obama administration is forcing abortions on girls after their how to have sex classes as much. |

Wow, this is hitting me bizarrely. Issac and I are using Carnivale in Rio as inspiration for a good deal of the music at the Halloween Party, and we were selecting a bunch of tunes last night and talking about Rio. Heheh.

No one better say anything negative about Rio or they'll be sued.

If the US rally wants to boost a local economy and pitch for the Olympics, why not raze Detroit and build and Olympic venue there?? It will not only create jobs and rebuild a city that is in hell. It also would give the planners and architects a clean slate to work with. Won't happen, I know.
This will do the same for part of Rio, as it did for Beijing. Hopefully it will help the people who live and work in Rio. Although, as I recall from NPR reports, some great old historical Beijing was bulldozed for the Olympics. Like Athens before it, in Beijing the BirdsNest stadium and cube are now vacant. In the end, I do not see what good lasting effect bringing the Olympics to a city may be. So maybe Detroit is not such a good idea after all? I dunno. For the record, I was in LA for the summer games in 84 and LA did a fabulous job as I recall. |

I think it depends on the city and their infrastructure and culture. If I recall, the facilities built for the 84 Olympics are/were used after the games were over. But we (the USA) have huge sporting and other events that would use the venues on a regular basis.
