Umm... Golden Girls.

And my point was that there are plenty of examples of American adaptations that are not "horrific". You may not be a fan of some of them (like I said, I'm no fan of Three's Company, but that doesn't mean I think it's horrific) and an article that claims that "everything" that's been adapted is worthless seems like a pretty lame article.
As with any show, the quality has to do with the effort and creativity that goes into it, not with its origin. |
Trying to clone something generally fails (in my opinion). I could go with "inspired by" but just doing it all over again?
Skip it. Maybe some of them have worked, and I'd maybe like to see a comparison with the original. Same reason I hate movie sequels. |
I don't mind remakes. There are a lot of bad remakes. But there are also a lot of good (such as the recent Karate Kid) or even great (such as The Maltese Falcon and The Wizard of Oz) remakes. Many well respected movies and TV shows are remakes of foreign titles.
If an attempt to redo it as an American version fails, oh well. Nothing lost except somebody else's money. If it succeeds then we all win. What'll likely happen is it will be just as lame as the original (yes, Dr. Who is lame; yes, this is based on watching only two very lame episodes; however, my taste is perfect so I'm right) and yet somehow this time that will be held against it. |
I love Doctor Who and not only because I've been watching it since the 80s.... :) I love that it's corny and quirky and strange.
What's likely to happen is they'll try to mimic the quirkiness but get it entirely and boringly wrong. |
For me the difference is I never saw most of the British versions of those shows so I was happy to watch the US versions. Dr. Who and I go way back. I just can't see US producers doing it justice. I expect they'll do something against canon like having an actual effects budget.

I'm thinking (trying not to, actually) of the USA remake of "Kath & Kim"

One British show us Americans screwed up is Whose Line Is It Anyways. The British version was brilliant and Clive Anderson was a MUC better host.

I MUCH prefer the Brit What Not to Wear.
