So let me be the first to ask: why were they peeling off scotch tape in a vacuum chamber? And what made them think to measure x-rays while doing it?

In the story they say that 50 years ago Russian scientists got similar result. But why they were doing it is a mystery ;)

Actually, the concept that electrons jump around when you pull the adhesive from the roll does make sense. If you're thinking about electron changes all day I guess you'd look at a roll of tape differently.

If I had a vacuum chamber laying around I could totally see myself going, hmmmm...lets put *this* in there and see what happens. Kinda like sticking various items in a microwave. Not that I'd know anything about that. :D

I do the same thing. For example, I was curious if the rumour about putting a poodle in a microwave to dry had any validity to it. Let's just say that I don't suggest trying it yourself - it really pissed off the poodle.
