Yet Another Gamer Nerd Puzzle Quest
1 Attachment(s)
I realize this is horribly vague and I won't even be able to confirm/deny the answer until after I return from Gen Con August 9th. But if you can help, my party and I will be grateful.
We're trying to solve a puzzle. It can be seen on the True Dungeon Teaser Trailer from around 0:22 to 0:28. It's in two sections, the glowing ball in the tilt labyrinth is something different and can be ignored. The puzzle board consists of a numbered 7 by 5 grid. Note that the number 17 is missing (skipped): Code:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
There are at least four translucent markers to cover up cells on the grid.
My primary goal is to figure out the first two lines. My secondary goal would be to determine the placement of each specific marker and actually solve the puzzle. Unfortunately, we do not know how many markers are used. It could be just the four which are visible or there could be more. I'm willing to bet all of the markers will fit in the blank white rectangle in the upper left, so I have a feeling there are no more than six. Any Photoshop or other image enhancing experts able to clarify/enhance the first two lines? |
I love True Dungeon!
I'm working on enhancing that image more right now. :) |
An earlier shot confirms that the 4th piece is a triangle.
My first instinct is that we're looking at die face shapes. So the square would be 6 (a d-6 having square sides). The triangles would be d-8, d-20, and d-4. So those 4 pieces we see would be put on 4, 6, 8, and 20 |
Oooo die shapes, that sounds good! And since TD is based on D&D, that totally gels.
If there turns out to be a pentagon-shaped marker (d12), that's almost a sure thing. Still not sure how the colors factor in, but that aspect may not be part of the puzzle we can see. It's often the case that puzzle clues are subtly given in previous rooms and frequently have to do with colors. (True Dungeon has 7 rooms.) |
Is every space supposed to be covered with a shape? Because most of those numbers aren't associated with regular polyhedrons and so there isn't a definite shape that could be associated with them (plus, what would go on the one?).
And why is 17 left out? This guy is a die collector and he doesn't have anything for 1, 21-23, 25, 27-29, 31, 33, and 35. |

I don't know. My only guess would be because the creator needed to get to 36, but that's pure speculation and even then, why 17?. |

Not the best, but about as good as I can get it right now:

Going with the whole "chance" and "judgement" lines, it's definitely got to refer to dice.
Ken also says it's dice. And, he said the colors are going off of the traditional D&D dice colors. Look those up, as he can't remember off the top of his head. So, he suggests playing the proper colors to their numbers as well. ;) |
Didn't the D&D dice just go up to 20 and with another one D10 for rand(100) rolls (so no reason to skip 17)?
d4, d6, d8, d10 (twice), d12 and d20? In which case that's triangle, square, triangle, kind of a pointy gem shape, pentagon, triangle. |

The creator of True Dungeon is a big fan of D&D First Edition and loves to put in elements of it into TD. So I would not be at all surprised if he only used five dice in a puzzle. |

Although, they weren't translucent, and seeing as the puzzle pieces are, the colors might not be important. But, probably still worth checking and noting, just in case. :) |
