Dole Whip v. Kaki-Gori
You all know Dole Whip. (Mmmmm . . . Dole Whip . . . *drool*)
Some of you know the joy that is Kaki-Gori. It's the best hoity-toity Japanese snow cone ever. It's refreshing and bought (and thus, consumed) in the beautiful Japan pavillion at EPCOT. The question is, which is better? Is there really a cold theme-park dessert that's better than a Dole Whip? I'll let others weigh in first . . . |
First of all, I can't believe there is something that is giving your beloved Dole Whips a run for it's money! I thought they were unbeatable.
Sadly, I can't compare Dole Whips to this kaka-gory you speak of. We had nothing of the sort at the Japanese Pavilion. The closest we got is to Chris having saki (which he seemed to enjoy which is why the cup is still on his desk) and I bought some wonderfully fizzy Japanese candy. But, I do not know of this Kaka-Gory. |
I may be having an invented memory(you know, where you kinda remember something, then you remember more after prompting, even if the more is not true) but I think I had this on a trip I took to EPCOT back in 1990....I remember enjoying it, but the memory is so fuzzy I could not comment on whether or not it was better then Dole Whips.
|
Better than a dole whip? I think that at least requires chocolate of some sort - but I haven't had the other so cannot comment on this discussion other than to express my astonishment.
|
Better than a Dole Whip....hahahahaha....that's funny!
:D |
Kaki-Gori is no ordinary snowcone. Ask Flippyshark--he had a snowcone the other day and said it was awful. Kaki-Gori, on the other hand, is divine.
And you don't have to listen to the current MK Adventureland music loop while eating it. Oh, and the Kaki-Gori lady is always really nice. Not so at the Dole stand. |
My Vote is for KAKI-GORI!!! Although I like Dole whip alot. The MK used to have a Rasberry Whip that I liked as much or more as the Dole whip. Adventureland at the MK also has a citrus whip. That's also good.
For me, the perfect Kaki-gori is made with half Tangerine and half Melon syrup. Yum! |

I cannot wait for all that to open back up at DLR..... |
I can't believe out of all of my trips to the park, I've never had a Dole Whip. I can't wait for them to open up again so I can finally see what the fuss is about.

You simply must try one.... |
I know. Hard to believe. I've gone to that stand for years and gotten pineapple juice and spears. I love pineapple. When I heard how yummy dole whips apparently are, I decided to try one, then they closed the stand.
|
MBC, you must get one. Preferably when their machine isn't broken--that was the worst Dole Whip I ever had, all warmish and mushy. A proper Dole Whip will be cold enough to make the pineapple juice start to freeze....mmmmm.
Melon & Tangerine Kaki-Gori is the best. HTH copied me. :p If only it were warm enough for Kaki-Gori . . . |
Tell someone in Conneticut, who just twisted their ankle slipping on ice, that 67 degrees isn't warn enough for a Kaja-Googoo.
|
When it's cold, they do not sell Kaki-Gori.

You are mistaken.
Food & Wine Festival. Overhyped chocolate desserts. Oppressive heat. People walking the other way with Kaki-Gori. Melontangerine Fan says "let's get some of that." Jokes ensue about Kaki-Gori being the best thing at the Food & Wine Festival. |
If that's the way you want to remember it, go right ahead. (Humor her everyone or she might become violent.) :D
Actually, it was something like that. But I did tell her how good they are before we got them. |
After some consideration, I am going to give a slight preferential edge to Kaki-Gori. It is the more refreshing snack of the two. (Dole Whip, as tasty as it is, does have a bit of a chemical aftertaste - it doesn't bother me at all, but Kaki-gori is much more "pure" in flavor. I also enjoy it's almost zen-like simplicity. Syrup on ice, nothing more. The sound of one lip smacking.)

Bravo, Flippy Shark. Bravo.
|
Um, as an ex-Dole-whip virgin (I had one at MK last July) I can attest to their sweetness and general yumminess- but....(and I know this might get me branded as a heretic) it is not something I would run to have again. It was good, but it was a little overly sweet and runny and sticky.
I would love to try the Kaki-Gori next time I am in FL though, sounds good (and more to my taste) |
Nephythys, if Dole Whip was too sweet for you, you would probably love Kaki-Gori.
|
I still think something from the chocolate family is missing in this comparisson - I put forth the dark chocolate rocky road from the Candy Palace as a possible candidate from team chocolate.
|
But that confection is not available at WDW.
I nominate Zebra Domes to represent Team Chocolate. |

As soon as Dippin' Dots showed up in malls, the magic was over. I've never purchased it anywhere outside of SFMM. :( Dole whip, hands down. |

I will happily chime in here. I just had a standard snow cone (or Sno-Kone as the case may have been) at Sea World, and it was not even in the same ballpark. (Nor was it in the same theme park. Snirk...)
Firstly, the ice in a standard snow cone is coarse, like little pellets of ice. You have to crunch them with your teeth. It's unpleasant, except perhaps for those people who like to chew ice. The ice in Kaki-Gori is much more like actual snow. It's soft and kind of fluffy, not as mushy as daquiri ice, but not hard and crunchy like the above-mentioned pellet cone. Then there is the syrup - my Sea World treat tasted like Kool-aid. Kaki-Gori has much nicer flavors. (tangerine, melon, cherry, there's one other that I am forgetting.) The Kaki-Gori flavorings are sweet but flavorful. I am guessing that somewhere, there may be something comparable in a mall - it would simply be a matter of getting the right kind of ice-pulverizing machine (the one at Epcot looks like a piece of bar equipment) and some Italian syrups. Of course, no mall is going to provide the tranquil Japanese garden surroundings which add immeasurably to the whole Kaki-Gori experience. |
CP, come to Florida. I will treat you to Kaki-Gori.
|
They sound delicious.

Is Liki Liki Shaved Ice still around? They had kiosks at malls including many flavors you could pour yourself with snowy ice. Anyway, you guys are definitely right about the ambiance thing. I'll definitely give it a whirl when I get to WDW....eventually. |
We're waiiiiiiiiiiiiiting . . . .

I knew it. I knew it!! I knew that Madcatterhorn Fan was really a cat. Thank you, CP for telling the world.
By the way, I think the fourth flavor is Strawberry. I love Kaki Gori. It's simple, tasty, and quite wonderful. |
. . . and there's no syrup pooled at the bottom when you finish.
Mmmmm . . . I wonder if I can get HTH to go out to EPCOT this afternoon? |
Hmmmm . . . I wouldn't hold my breath :D (I've got a performance tonight. I should relax this afternoon.)
|
I know. You'll notice I didn't ask.
But we should go get Kaki-Gori sometime soon. "It's been a loooong time . . ." :p Quote:

It has been too long since we've had some Kaki-Gori. I want some.
