Sesame Street - Not For Kids?

The first episodes of Sesame Street are out on DVD now, and they come with an earnest warning that they're for adults only.

I want off this planet.

Here's the article

Wow. I agree that kids are shielded more now than in the past; I don't think it's such a good idea but it's not my call.

I was just telling the Girl about how Morgan Freeman used to be on a kid's show called 'The Electric Company" and how I loved to watch the show primarily because of him. (We were watching 'Evan Almighty' and she was wondering what other movies he's been in). TEC was a great show, like 'Sesame Street' it was new, a bit subversive compared to a lot of the crap that was out then, and most of it would be considered totally un-PC these days. I see very little on TV these days that even comes close to the originality and excellence that shows like the early 'Sesame Street', 'Zoom' and 'Electric Company' had going for them.

What about:
321 Contact with the Bloodhound Gang
Reading Rainbow
Mr. Rogers Neighborhood
Romper Room
Captain Kangaroo

The Electric Company was where I was first introduced to the genius of Tom Lehrer. I am grateful that I was exposed to those great PBS shows growing up. God bless Mr. Hooper.

Okay, I need to get that DVD set :)

Three! Two! One! Contact, makes it happen, is the reason, that everything happens, contact!

What's hilarious to me is that while PBS shows are way more moralistic and PC now than when I was a kid, the shows for kids older than preschool are way more adult in theme, contain more violence, etc. But frankly, I'd almost rather have the violence than the crappy morals PBS tries to push on preschoolers.

That's like HR Puff N' Stuff.

I think they were puffing some stuff when they wrote that show!!:D

Or, dropping some acid.

Really, they were.

Oh, and Bullwinkle isn't for children either. But, damn it was (and is) great stuff.

Whenever there's trouble, we're there on the double. We're the Bloodhound Gang. If you've got the crime, we've got the time. We're the Bloodhound Gang.

There was only one reason to watch the Banana Splits. And that was to see John Michael Vincent in "Danger Island". He was hot.

I'm pretty speechless on this one. (I'm sure you're grateful.) ;)

"Four banana, three banana, two banana, one.
All bananas playing in the bright warm sun.
Flippin like a pancake, poppin like a cork
Fleagle, Bingo, Drooper and Snork."

Ah yes.... Childhood....

The one I have the most respect for is reading rainbow. I have always loved the book aspect of it plus it is great to see kids getting involved in the show. I respect the way LeVar Burton still hosts and produces the show even after all these years.

I'd sing it with you, if you had the words right. ;)

It's the "Tra la la Song."

I never watched Sesame Street as a kid so fortunately I was safe from its malignant influence.

Strangler Lewis 11-24-2007 11:17 AM

Nor did I. I believe it's been said that what Sesame Street most taught kids was how to watch TV. Fortunately, my parents taught me that valuable lesson.
