If one wanted to- how do I put this- purge negative energies and emotional hurts from a really fvcked up relationship- and let's say wanted to burn away certain items....is there any good.....umm, stuff to burn with it?

Like smudging?

(nothing like a Christian asking for a pagan rite to burn stuff)

Help- and forgive any unintended slights (I sound like an idiot)

I'm no pagan, but I love a good ritual and I say burning requires an oil of some sort - I think it's up to you to select something appropriate - extra virgin? Something nutty? There's a wealth of symbology awaiting you at every aisle of the market.

I will start by saying that Disneyphile can answer this better than I - she is far more edumucated in the Wiccan ways. I will (with the help of GusGus) give some basics.

Since you aren't experienced with full rituals, we will avoid heavy details.

Some basic thoughts:

• Banishments work best during a waning moon (the time between a Full Moon and a New Moon). Unfortunately, today (7/1) is the last day of waning moon. The next full moon is July 18, so any time after that would work. Again, a waning moon is not a must; it just helps.
• Remember that you are only banishing the MEMORIES of this person and the relationship: you do not want to wish harm upon the person as part of your ritual. The rule of three is strong within Wicca: everything you put out into the Universe will come back to you three-fold (known as the Three-Fold Reed).
• If you have an item(s) to burn as part of the ritual (physical items that are reminders of the person you are trying to banish from your life), make sure they are non-toxic. You don't want to be polluting when you are banishing (Harm Ye None, Lest Ye Be Harmed).
• Only burn stuff outdoors.
• As far as what "ritual," it looks like ABG covered the basics while I was writing. That should cover you pretty good.
• But I do (slightly) disagree with ABG on one minor point: Sage is more for cleansing and purifying. It would be great for cleansing your body after the banishment. Bay Leaf is good for Protection, Purification, and Healing (and is easy to find as opposed to some other herbs such as myrrh).
• Also consider burning some sweetgrass after the ritual to seal in the cleansed goodness.

No, that's not true.

I like good ritual too. Deep meaning is a key part of it being good, though, and I think most of the rituals people engage in don't possess that but are done simply because it is expected of them in some way and doesn't come primarily from an internal desire.

I've been quite moved by Mass when among the deeply devout and found it all silly when among people who only go once a year on Easter so that their moms will stop nagging.

I'm a Pecan (that's a cross between a Pagan and a Wiccan), and where I come from, if you wan't to burn an item from some dude that shat you off, this is how:

1. Take the item and cut it in half. If it's a big item (like a car or swimming pool) hire an earth-mover or similar from Kennard's (or the American equivalent of an equipment hire company).

2. Burn one half, using an oxy-actylene torch (or a match if it is little like photos or baby hair).

3. Place the ashes in a suitably sized mailer. For car and pool remains, call 911 and have them wrap it in canvas.

4. Address the remains to the intended, and affix appropriate stamps. This may mean raiding the spare coin jar in the kitchen. For large objects, a sheet of contact plastic will keep the stamps in place, and prevent inclement weather from peeling them off.

5. Place the wrapped/stamped object in or near a post box.

6. Perform a 'Pecan' ritual around the remaining half of the object. If it's big, don't trip over it, and if it's small don't step on it.

7. At exactly midnight, pee on it. That's why my cult is called "Pecan".

8. When the other party receives the burnt half, they'll either keel over, or piss themselves laughing.

9. Either way, you win.

How about if you sell the good stuff on eBay, give the less good stuff to charity, and throw the rest away. Do you really need to burn something to get over it?

Bear and I burnt a $hitload of fireworks when we were last in Texas simply because we ain't allowed to do so in Orstralia...but I do agree...perhaps anything less than that requiring a Kennard's hire could go to charity.

Come to think of it, perhaps Kennard's could do with the bigger stuff.

Visualization I think is also important. Sure - the ritual is the physical part of it - but see it in your mind. See the positive outcome of leaving it all behind. See your hapiness in the process. See yourself glad to have it past you.

Ahhh... I haven't thought about wiccan stuff in soooo long. Makes me want to go find that box in the garage filled with all my books and schtuff.

Please tell me this is about D's relationship and not yours! (Oy, we need to catch up.)

That said, Kevy and ABG pretty much said what I would have.

Most importantly, remember that the ritual only helps your mind focus on removing the energies from your life. Rituals/objects/spells are merely a focus or tool to take control of our own minds, which then affects our world around us. ;)

I know some very old crones who don't do any physical ritual at all, and can literally banish bad things away without even thinking about it. They stopped using tools a long time ago, because their brains were already trained to do the work for them.

A place in life I strive for!

I've never had to banish any person or memories associated with that person. I've always tried to keep my memories and experiences and when applicable, learn from them.
