I used to do that! My mom would almost always catch me and make me go to sleep. Or at least pretend to sleep; I had insomnia sometimes.

While I'm not a hopeless romantic necessarily, I used to read those for the same things- the historical setting. My mom used to think I read it for the sex (but it's sex between boys and girls... not really what I want to think about...) but it was really for the adventure around it. I'd skip the sex scenes- boring. Mom never believed me.
