I like the steampunk genre aesthetically but can't think of anything besides William Gibson's "The Difference Engine" that was a good thing in the genre (I mean, besides elements of Jules Verne's writing). Not sure if comic books are your bag, but Moore's The League of Extraordinary Gentleman is a good example.

And aspects of The Golden Compass - Lyra's Oxford - were very steampunk inspired. And the book is fantastic.
