The simplest way I can explain it is like this:

Edge and 3G are types of cell data networks. So you can access the internet from an iPhone (or other type of smart phone) just on the go.

Wifi is the connection that wireless computers/laptops use.

The iPhone can connect to a wireless network, like at a Starbucks, airports or home if available. When it connects to the wireless network it can do internet things faster (I think).
