![]() We were working in the backyard all morning. After lunch we realized we had not seen one of the turtles all morning – Norma, the outgoing one who usually comes out of the water to watch us whenever we’re doing something near the pond. We looked in the water; only one turtle. We spent over an hour combing the backyard for her (she likes to explore); no trace of her. She’s disappeared. I’m devastated. She was my favorite; she had personality (the other one, Ninja, just hides in the pond; she won’t come near people).
Why am I so sad over losing a turtle I’ve only had for 3 months? ![]()

Are you sure she is not just hiding (burrowing underground)? Turtles are very good at doing that and then magically reappearing at a later date.
I don't want to give false hope, but GusGus's aunt has a turtle that does that frequently.

HI!
|
Turtles DO like to explore. I just hope she didn't get out of the backyard. I'm not sure how strong their homing device is. I hope she turns up soon.

I hope she shows up soon. Maybe she's just hiding. I find with animals you get used to having them around. It can be heart breaking when they're gone.

Turtles disappear. I've known several people who own turtles who have stories like yours. Turtles are fence testers. They are really smart and are always looking for ways to escape. I hope she turns up, though.

Speaking of turtles, I stripped down to my underwear and swam in the north fork of the American River Saturday morning. Brrrrrrr.

Thanks everyone.
I don't think she got out of the back yard on her own. We have block walls on 2 sides, and between the house and the one side block wall. There is a wooden gate on the driveway side of the house, but there is no room for her to get between it and the concrete driveway. The back side of the yard has a wooden fence, but there were no holes dug under it (we checked). Also, two of the fish are missing from the pond. We suspect that some waterfowl may have stopped in for a snack...
