[Cadaverous Pallor]

eating in my car
keeping relish off my lap
listening to African dance rhythms and staring at the trees
saplings no more but still strapped to support sticks
common practice

slender straight stalks explode green out the top
sideshow bob
matched on either side by rigid training poles
ex-trees, shaved cousins
past accomplishment assisting the next generation
teaching the ways of resisting gravity

all well and good yet I can't help but think
what if you learned to stand
while strapped to corpses?
