Canadian Court Overturns Father's grounding of 12 y/o Girl

The girl had taken her father to Quebec Superior Court after he refused to allow her to go on a school trip for chatting on websites he tried to block, and then posting "inappropriate" pictures of herself online using a friend's computer.

Okay... no

I see in reading the story that there is an ongoing custody battle (people should NOT use the children as pawns in a divorce!), but even so, this case should not have gone to court. It is not up to the courts to subvert parental authority (I am talking about grounding or taking away privileges: obviously I am not about to condone child abuse).

I'm sorry but if I ground my son for going on the internet and posting inappropriate pictures than he is grounded. The court can say what they want but I'm not letting my child endanger himself. I understand this is an unusual case with a 10 year custody batle but since when can the courts tell me what is appropriate for my child. If I'm abusing my child that is one thing and I should be punished but I won't let my child inadvertantly allow himself to be abused by the internet at such a young age!

I'm guessing there's more to this than the story reports. For instance, with a 10 year custody battle, perhaps the father simply is not considered a guardian and does not have the right to inflict punishment. Also, it says "refused to allow her to go on a school trip." Does that mean the trip already happened? If so, what exactly is the point of "overturning" the grounding if the damage has already been done? Is this a gambit by the mother to gain an edge in the custody battle?

I'm taking this story with a whole lot of salt grains.
