All depends upon the ground that the area sits on. If one is on bedrock, not too much damage. If you are on landfill or a former marsh, you will see lots of damage.

For example, in the 1989 Loma Prieta quake, the Marina District incurred such severe damage because the land was pretty loose, being a lot of landfill on/near very wet areas.

Yes, the USGS has narrowed it down to there being "major quake" (6+ I think) somewhere in California sometime in the next 30 years

As freaked out as I was, earthquakes also fascinate me. It's an awe-inspiring and humbling moment, realizing that we are powerless when it comes to the forces of nature. No matter how advanced our technology, nothing can compare to her power. We'll never stop the earth from shaking, the wind from blowing, the rain from pouring, etc., etc. At any given moment, we can be wiped off the face of the planet at her will.
