I also don't like touching velvet, but I love how it looks.
I like touching suede though. For some people that's a turnoff.

Velvet is rich, luscious and, well, velvety (not to be confused with veveeta, which is not, that's just gross). I think of it best as costume, but I think as NA mentioned, in a real vintage piece of clothing, it would be wonderful.

In the Steampunk thread, I kinda went overboard posting several beautiful pieces from the Pyramid Collection catalog. Many of them were velvet. This is my favorite one, but I think it is mainly because of the model (in case you are worried, the picture is totally safe for work):

I love wearing velvet. An added bonus- doesn't wrinkle.
 Should be used judiciously, though, as it can be overbearing.
