We, as a matter of fact, are very far from practicing Jews at this point in life, but yes it is a time of year that is usually centered around family get togethers none the less. We've missed past years likely because of that, or being on a weeknight, or who knows what else.

The tradition belongs to those who instigated it, don't go altering on our account. Nevermind that with Disquieting Metomorphosis to consider, planning around us would be restrictive. Among other things, we'll have just returned from our first stint away from him. We're going to a wedding in Boston next weekend, leaving him with grandparents for a couple days. The planning-ahead centers of our brains are currently at full capacity with the NASA-level logistics that requires.

Yeah, but even if we start to veer away now - it might encourage your participation in future years when, by then, Ju Koon might be in late November.

Sorry if I seemed so strident. It's just that I'm a big fan of things happening when they happen, and human compliance with that as encouragement to get up and go. But compromise is good. Fifty Five Fifty is good example. I could not conceive of celebrating Disneyland Birthday some other date, but it was ok to celebrate my birthday concurrently, which meant 2 weeks after the fact.

Unfortunately, one downer factor of changing the date is that it adds another painful level of logistical hassle in first arriving at a mutually convenient date. It's why dates-certain work best for group things. But maybe we'd like the comfort of having Ju Koon, unlike Yom Kippur, be on a predictable date - say, maybe the second Saturday in October ... ya know, always.

I agree that something like this would be a good compromise.

Since K was going to be back just a few weeks later (hopefully for good) I saw no harm in waiting for him.

I now see the error of my ways. It happens this way because it's always happened this way. And by always I mean the past 3-4 years. And once a faux holiday created for fun happened that way it must always.

I'm happy to turn it into a faux holiday, but please understand it has not been a faux holiday at all. It has been a ten-thousand-year-old, very sacred and meaningful holiday that we gave another name to. Like calling Christmas "Yuleday."

And the only guaranteed part of Ju Koon is the Ju part (because we do it ourselves), while the Koon part is absolutely hit and miss.

So please don't get me re-started again on why the history of the world didn't start 4 years ago when the people of the LoT joined in on this. I've been celebrating this holiday my entire life and, pardon me, but I brought it to the LoT to share.

I'm reluctant to make Ju Koon a separate holiday. Am I to throw bread into the ocean twice in Autumn now? It would seem silly and one of those rituals will seem superfluous. But if it means more people can join in, and look forward to a date certain every year - fine. Pick a date.

I find it wonderful that D Googled JuKoon and disappointing that he didn't find anything.

The name derived from a completely sober and right minded conversation (if you can be sober and right minded while being kidnapped in a volvo with me driving). After the driving adventure, the stop at the sea, the ritual throwing of underwear into the water and the creepy Pt. Fermin soiree which was quite a bit like "The Birds" only with raccoons. (We went to Pt. Fermin to see the sunken city and the feral cats...."Look Keith, it's a cat? That's not a cat, Lisa".) When we were driving back to LB to get some sustenance. It was suggested by one (of the 5 in the car) that the name should be changed to Jew Coon to aptly reflect the actual events that occurred. It was then suggested that we spell it slightly differently - Ju Koon. Why the Korean spelling, I don't know. Maybe it was a sign of the addition of Kimchi into our lives.

To top off the evening, after a nosh we returned to our house and saw an animal on the neighbor's lawn. "Look, it's a raccoon!" "That's not a raccoon, Keith, that's a cat" "No, Lisa, that's a raccoon". That cemented the new name of the holiday and, little did we know, gave a peek under the tent of raccoon adventures to come.

Oh, and Ju Koon must be celebrated on or very near the actual date but the celebration must be somewhat spontaneous. We can't let the raccoons know we're coming.
