Am I a thief?

I am one of those people who checks their change and if given too much I always return it. I don't know how many times I have done this at drive-thru windows only to be met with a blank stare. I also seldom get a thank you for it either.

My office sits above a Subway. I live there.

The other day, in the lunchtime crunch, I ordered a large diet coke and got like, the teensiest cup. Because I was in a rush, I took the cup and bolted. What was I thinking? I got jipped!

Those thieving bastards. (I'm just teasing! ) They got my extra moolah! So, I give that money to you, Moonliner. To donate toward your extra meat. All is right in the change till, and all is karmically right in the world again (at least I hope so!)

Theif? No. They accepted what you paid in exchange for what they gave you. It's kind of like them signing a contract you know has a clause to your advantage but it is their responsibility to find it.

Immoral? Not really, for the same reason. Ultimately the responsibility falls on the Subway to charge the correct price.

But I'd still say you should have brought it to the clerk's attention. If for no other reason that to possibly make her life easier. I doubt that Subway can keep track with sufficient accuracy to know at the end of the day one extra order of meat went out than was paid for, but it also wouldn't surprise me to learn that they do (they probably have RFID chips implanted in each deli slice) and regardless of how it came to management attention her sloppiness could get her in trouble. Again, that is her responsibility to avoid, but since you weren't looking to score free hamlike-product I'd have spoken up just to be nice.

Yes, but he knew he had double meat. Not saying is the same as stealing isn't it?

Ahh at last we get to the meat of the matter. When I made the original post I was wondering how long a discussion on "double meat" could go before it swelled and started pointing in a new direction ..

An interesting point. If the clerk had handed me an extra dollar (the cost of the double meat) I would have returned the money as I have done under similar circumstances in the past. Somehow I see the sandwich differently than the cash. I wonder why.
