Um Rob? I strenuously object to your signature ticker. That length of time is just unacceptable.

That's a 21% chance of getting exactly 2 URs. An 8% chance of getting exactly 3 URs, etc.

So a total chance of about 33% chance of getting 2 or more URs.

Ah, I didn't know you can add them together. Cool.

And thank you for the research!

This True Dungeon thing sounds like it would be fun, but I'm left wondering more about the experience. The main thing that has turned me off from Magic The Gathering is that it all comes down to an arms race. He who buys the most cards is most likely to win. And that's what ultimately turned me on to D&D. You can spend a lot (mini figs, terrain, tiles, books, books, and more books) or almost nothing at all and it doesn't matter. It's all in how you build your character (which costs nothing) and how you role play (which just relies on experience and imagination).

How does True Dungeon compare?

And my thought was always, "Why wouldn't my friends and I just print our own deck of the most powerful cards?"

Playing True Dungeon with a sack full of URs will make your delve easier, but über tokens are absolutely not required to succeed. Skill and brains are what will lead to a win.

Combat is resolved via a shuffleboard-like system. So even if you have a kick-ass weapon token, if you can't slide, you're not going to hit the monster.

Roughly half of the rooms are puzzle-based and have no combat at all. These require you to use your noggin and tokens almost never play a factor in those situations.

Spellcasting is enhanced by various memorization techniques. Any spell you cast will work, but if you pass the skill check, it will work better. Clerics memorize prayer beads & virtues, druids tree leaves, and wizards have a planar map.

Because there just isn't time to create a character, all players are issued pre-made character sheets with complete stats. Before the run starts, all participants get a "free" (it's included in the price of the game) pack of tokens they can equip themselves with. Trading of these tokens during the pre-game period is common and helpful to all party members. You may be the wizard who gets heavy armor and a sword while the fighter got a wand and a robe. A quick swap will improve everyone's chances.

If you're planning on attending Gen Con Indy, I highly recommend playing True Dungeon. It's a total blast!

It sounds like it. I'll have to look into it and see what I can fit in my budget. Thanks.

It definitely is a blast. Ken and I have an idealist wish of a year-round local True Dungeon that changes weekly. We'd almost live there.

SM - what character do you usually play?

Classes, in order of my desire to play them:
  • Cleric
  • Paladin
  • Fighter
  • Barbarian
  • Ranger
  • Monk
  • Rogue
  • Bard
  • Wizard
  • Druid
I acquired most of my URs based on the assumption I'd be playing a cleric. But since that's not always an option, I can decently equip any melee-based class. I have never played a druid nor wizard and have no desire to do so.

I played in one Live Action role playing game when I first came to DC.

Being a noob, I was assigned a rather minor role. My primary task was to host a charity auction. Towards that end, I was given the ability cast geas once per hour.

So I made the best of it. My standard geas was:

You will do your best to make sure your three closest friends attend the charity auction on Sunday.

6 Hours on Friday, 12 Hours on Saturday and 5 hours on Sunday.

I also visited the dealers room (in character) and requested donations for the auction. I actually had about a dozen real items to auction off.

By the time Sunday rolled around the "Auction" (which was planned as a minor sub plot) was the talk of the town. Pretty much everyone in the game arrived in the very small room they had reserved.

It would have been one hell of an event except for a little hitch in the plan. Someone planted a rather powerful bomb in my podium which put a sudden end to the Auction, myself and about half the people in the room.
