The Faun was magical (assuming it was real), so he wouldn't have seen it anyway. I liked the "ambiguity" of the story, but prefer to think of it as different perceptions of reality rather than ambiguity. I imagine that the fantasy part of the movie was very real to Ofelia, and the "real" part was true for Mercedes et al.
