My in-laws traveled to Yosemite last year. Their gift to us was a sequoia seed picked up at the gift shop. We've still got it in its cute can ("Grow a sequoia in your backyard!") and we're threatening to plant it in our foot-wide strip of dirt in the patio.

Go for it! We have a sequoia that was planted in the front of our cabin in 1939, it's about 50 feet tall now.
