I hadn't heard any results of the investigations; from your post it sounds like Wolfowitcz, creepy or not, did the right thing in trying to distance himself from decisions involving the lady in question.
As far as terms, I rather like female companion. Girlfriend has always seemed kind of trivial, and mistress to be smarmy.
