The end of an era - Grizzly Flats
Grizzly Flats, the full size train setup in Ward Kimball's back yard is being dismantled.
![]() The LA times has the article here. The good news is that the train depot, a prop from the movie "So Dear to My Heart", is being given to John Lasseter. The "Emma Nevada", Ward Kimball's full size steam engine, can still be visted at the Orange Empire Railway Museum. |

I don't feel saddened by this.
It is just a point in history. It is not as if the components are beng distroyed and discarded. Each piece is being passed on to others who will honor the history and perpetuate its existance. History is beng honored, not forgotten. Good story - I really enjoyed.

If you haven't been to the that train musuem - it's actually pretty cool. I drive by it every day on my way to work. Avoid the Thomas the Train season though when it's packed. The rest of the year you virtually have the place to yourself during the week and can even drive the trains yourself through some special program.

Oh...it is sad, but just on a personal note for me. I was lucky enough to have seen it in person. My Dad belonged to the TTOS (toy train operating society) and was friends with Ward. I never knew the full scope of who this man was, until last year when I was talking to my Mom about the Fullerton Train Days. I was telling her about the Ward Kimball engine being there and she told me "you know we knew him". Once she told me the basics, it brought back a flood of memories about going to see him and his trains. I just never knew who the man was, I just loved visiting him and his trains. If only I had cultivated my love for Disney at a younger age to where it is today. Oh well....still they are great memories.
Otherwisde, I understand why they need to do this, and I agree, it was a very nice article. |
