Wow, we are so completely polar opposite on our opinions about this ride.

What exactly is the point to so immensely creating an underwater environment to the extent that you go into a partially-submersed vehicle to actually view things UNDER WATER ... only to watch TV?

I simply don't get it.

As soon as I see those movie screens ... the same kind of thing happens to me when I see the movie bride in the Haunted Mansion. I'm out of it. The entire illusion of going underwater and viewing things in liquid space is thrown out the window .... because I am intimately familiar with projected images and KNOW that Dory and Marlin and Co. are not under water.

They are a film.

It's cheap. I hate it for the same reason I dislike Star Tours and frelling despise the new Bride.

Darla is the best thing about FNSV. She's an underwater 3-D figure in one of the Disneyland's most elaborately-constructed 3-D environments.

Everything else is lame.

One more early morning viewing. One nighttime viewing, hopefully at closing - so we can extend our stay till after 2 am ... and then I am done with the new Submarine Voyage.

Oh, but I like the Sub-theme Monorail. Hey, it's not even a condom!

Best part about your respective opinions... you rode the same ride at the same time.

I love it!

Rose and I *almost* staggered back to Disneyland today, after closing the park last night - Rose really enjoyed the Subs... but we ended up riding Mummy and Jurassic Park, followed by an awesome afternoon nap.

The thing I liked about the Subs is there seems to be a lot more depth to the sets - but unfortunately, they just about threw away one of the best opportunities to "sell" a part of the illusion. The sunken "butt" sequence - Why oh why couldn't they have used a physical prop of Bruce menacing the sub?!? The surrounding set was beautiful, and then it was TV time...

Aw, Steve, no "props" for the Angler fish? I know it was diminished by the surrounding screenage, as well as the waaaay too drawn out runup (okay, I get it, there glowing things), oh and the pathetically lame lack-of-reveal when you're in the back. But you gotta admit it's a pretty cool figure.

Of course, it just puts in stark relief how much better it is than the screens.

Yeah, the angler-fish was cool. We were in the exact middle of the boat, but the timing of the reveal was all off.

Also, as it had been one of my only spoilers (Kevin Yee raved about the similar effect for Florida's Nemo Lite), I was rather disappointed it wasn't something spectacular.

But yeah, as one of the actual figures ... it gets high marks from me. As do the few old skool turtles who were figures (heheh, one of them was on the half-shell, with all of its "works" revealed).
