I've been using the calendar function on my phone lately, but I still keep a backup on paper for a lot of things. My paper calendar is my "brain" but the phone one is nice because it puts things in the order in which they happen, which my paper one may not do on a lot of days; depends when things get scheduled. Often I schedule something in the evening, write it down, then schedule something in the morning, and now it's out of order.

Since I've lately been forgetting my phone everytime I take my iPod somewhere, I'm sorta convinced that I'm a one-device man who needs a combo something.

Being that I'm not Japanese, I don't need a camera at my disposal 24/7 ... but it would be nice to have my iPod and phone be one unit. That's it, though. I certainly don't need the internet everywhere I go ... and paying to have it on a mobile basis is beyond even my fairly extravagant expense allowances.

The touch-interface seems best with a plethora-use device ... and I just feel an oldster like me is never going to have much plethora-needs on the move.

Of course, one of the downsides of screens in the digital age - cellphone screens, camera screens - is that you often can't see them in the daylight. Has Apple solved this problem?

Seems to me the base issues of daylight visibility and skin oils are not being addressed in any reviews of the iPhone. Who cares how much it does if you can't operate it in the daytime and must clean it after every use?

The iPhone battery will only survive about 300-400 recharges, the company says. Because the unit is sealed, consumers can't swap out dead batteries. Instead, dead phones must be sent to Apple, where battery replacement will take three business days and cost $79 plus a $6.95 shipping charge. Those who can't live without their cell phones for those three days can rent a spare iPhone for $29.

DOH!

Why, in this day and age, did Apple seal the battery inside? That was stupid!

Because, as I understand, it was necessary for getting their form down to the size it is.

And people don't seem too bothered by the similar problem on with the iPod. Hopefully, though, before long it is a job that will be doable at an Apple or AT&T store so that the 3-day wait isn't necessary.

But yeah, it seems a decision up there with that horrible round one-button iMac mouse. At least that was easily replaced.

Ah yes, the infamous hockey puck. That didn't last too long, and it only took them 25+ years to finally acknowledge that people want more than one button on their mouse.

Somehow, the battery issue doesn't seem like an issue to me. All cell phones have limited battery re-charging lives and it doesn't seem to make much of a difference if it charges at 100% or 90%. The way most people go through devices, it's not going to be an issue anyways.

I've eventually replaced the batter on every cell phone I've owned (three over the last decade). But it was never that big of a deal. I just went to a store and bought a new one and swapped it out. Since I'm going to the store regardless, if the iPhone could be swapped on site that would be great but sending my phone away for three days would be annoying (and I easily go a week without actually using mine).

As people increasingly give up landlines to go cell only (like we are) it becomes and even bigger issue.

iPhone- cute- but not worth the $$, changing carriers, or the glitches for a new technology.
