Wendybeth's idea of a trial living arrangement sounds like a good one. I don't know how well that goes over with the people already occupying the apartment, though... they could want a roommate immediately and figure if they chose you, you'd mesh well.
Me personally, I looked there, but I don't think I'd be comfortable picking a roommate through a website. Mostly because I've lived with family all my life (to whom I'm very close to and lived with relatives through college) and really need to know who I'm living with. So when I think about it, there are only two non-family people I know I could feel comfortable living with. Depending on what area you're looking to settle into, you'll find that the typical range of splitting rate (that is, if you get your own room, in a 2-room place) is around $700. Even some borderline questionable areas can be pricey too (don't know why, proximity to somewhere?). But $600 is not out of the question, of course.
