I feel really bad for NASA. This is a PR nightmare and quite possibly there is nothing behind it. Apparently the report in question simply repeats gossip without providing any details.

Instead, NASA is left having to try to investigate it themselves. If they find something and report it then they continue the PR nightmare. If they simply don't find something then you'll have the people who think they didn't really try and the people who think they are covering it up. If they somehow find evidence that it isn't true, even if people believe it, few people will hear about it since the news won't cover it.
