What I want to know is, was pink a girls' color 200 years ago? I think the whole pink/blue thing for babies is a relatively recent phenomenon.

A moment later I have a Wikipedia link.
Quote:
At one point pink was considered more of a boy's color, (as a watered-down red, which is a fierce color) and blue was more for girls. The associate of pink with bold, dramatic red clearly affected its use for boys. An American newspaper in 1914 advised mothers, "If you like the color note on the little one's garments, use pink for the boy and blue for the girl, if you are a follower of convention." [2]
"There has been a great diversity of opinion on the subject, but the generally accepted rule is pink for the boy and blue for the girl. The reason is that pink being a more decided and stronger color is more suitable for the boy, while blue, which is more delicate and dainty, is prettier for the girl."
Heh. Seems we always try to back up our fads with "science" claiming that we're hardwired for it. Right.

I've heard from those that live in the Middle East that pink is a good luck color in many Arab nations and is often used as an exterior house color for luck.

Most prevelant, I would think in the Dr. Spock days? Within the last 100 years?

I had no idea the correlation to pink being a good luck color. I always thought it had to do with reflective properties for the heat, etc. Just goes to show you.

How on earth did I miss this delightful Thread with like, the most fabulous title ever?? (I need to stop clicking on "new posts" like I always do and actually roam around the forums!)

Goody goody gumdrops! Girls do prefer pink! Well, at least this one does, which is no surprise to my fellow LoT'rs. I also prefer sparkles, glitter, feathers, Hello Kitty & Barbie. And her dream house. And the dream corvette. And Disney Princesses.

How pinkified am I?

My boyfriend and I bought a Teddy Bear hamster a few months ago (I've never had a hamster!) I immediately purchased a rolling Cinderella carriage vehicle for her. You know, for the frilly rodent on the go. It's pink, full of glitter, with fancy pink-hearted wheels. Of course, she prefers rollin' in her plain ol' regular ball. it may be banal, but at least it's pink. Heck, even her cage filling/fluff is pink.

I also spyed a Pretty Princess Pink Hamster Castle (yes, that was the name & you know it was marketed specifically to freaks like me) and I squealed with delight. Until my boyfriend begged me not to do that to her. Or more importantly, to him. Especially since he has "custody".
