Well, after 41 years of drinking his coffee he dies at 87. I'd say he found that coffee isn't so bad for your health after all.

He was quite a successfull businessman, IMHO. He was personable, and cared about his customers (from what I hear, as I never met him).

RIP Pete. I'll see you next to the Heaven Roast Coffee Pot some day.

I didn't go there too often in the early '80s because I lived on the south side of campus, but it's a little strange to think that something that seemed so "Berkeley" at the time became a national chain.

I'd hardly call it a national chain. It's primarily on the west coast with a handful of stores elsewhere. It's still pretty "Berkeley." I'd say a good portion of our customers (Yes, I'm working there again) are Bay-area transplants, or spent a great deal of time there.

But in other news, I'm no where near a Peet's. I'll have to stop by tomorrow - can't sully this with a Starbuck's coffee.
