There was (or maybe still is) a pump oil well it Huntington Beach that was painted to look like a grasshopper. It was one of my favorite random things as a child.

Did you ever see the big Union 76 oil storage tank that they made to look like a pumpkin every year? I don't remember exactly where it was, but somewhere in the Long Beach/Wilmington area if I remember correctly.
