Well, if you are buying from a mattress/bedding place, the usually will take your old mattress for free (with set up).

SJ - latex is out. Not allergic, but it makes it not easy to breathe when in close proximity to my face.

Sorry to hear that. Note that 99% of latex allergies are to a protein found in latex gloves....latex mattresses don't have that protein.

Get yourself a memory foam mattress made from Sensus Brand visco-elastic. It's very similar to Tempurpedics but sleeps much cooler. It's also probably going to cost you about 30-40% less.

Good to know - but I'm still not willing to take the chance.

Besides the latex and memory foam mattresses, do you have any recommendations or tips?

Aside from foam based mattresses I know little except one thing......firm mattresses can always be made,thru the additions of toppers and such, to feel softer......the reverse in not as easy.
