Washington had a law go into effect in January I think that bans texting while driving. Their hands free law starts today. I, however, live just across the border in Idaho, where we have no laws about it yet (that I know of). My car has bluetooth built in though, so it's hard to forget it

The articles I've read - texting wasn't included because at the time the law was drafted, in I think 2001, it wasn't an issue.

I also saw a quote from someone in law enforcment that texting could be included in just general negligent driving so they don't need a specific law for it.

I've heard this from several sources.

Started using the bluetooth and actually, it's a snap. Today I had to sit on hold for a while and instead of holding a phone to my ear, I went with the bluetooth and did chores while I waited. I've decided to turn it on when I'm driving more than around the block and keep it on the seat for quick access when the phone rings. I really don't like wearing it if I'm not using it. Turning it on and off is a success so far. I don't drive much anyway.

Apparently, cops are pulling people over left and right. According to a news report I saw while getting my hair cut.

I like this law. Too many dinglecheeses on their cell phones not paying attention to what they're doing. Granted, I happen to be posting this from my car, but I'm exempt from my own logic.

Good. Enforcement is going to be a big deterrent. Fines start at $20 for the first offense and go up from there. It would be nice if there were harsher penalties. Business people who live on their phones may not care about the smaller fines.

Does this law only cover phone usage? I ask because I wonder if I can still legally use my electric shaver while driving.

If a cop notices that your driving is impaired because of it, they can give you a ticket. In fact, if it hinders you in any way, drinking coffee could get you a ticket.

I should probably actually read the actual WORDING of the law here, but are you just not allowed to put the phone up to your ear?

I mean, if I call my voice mail, for instance, I STILL need to pick up the handset and dial in the password digits.

EDIT: OK I am a tard, I should have read the last page of posts which answered my question.
