I loved GC's rant -- but moonliner brings up an interesting tangent...one that would make a great new thread.

I, for example, cannot go see the new Indy film for very personal reasons. I just cannot get past how one of my friends was treated in the early stages of getting that movie off the ground.

And sometimes when I find out about icky behavior on the part of some musician I've been enjoying it ruins my ability to enjoy the work.

In the abstract, these things should not happen -- the work should stand on its own, I know. But I'm just a flawed, emotional human being.

I understood that, I was just musing on the larger issue.

For me, I won't watch anything by Woodie Allen, that's just too oggie for me. However I have watched movies with stars that have their head up their arse politically. I'd probably not refrain from watching a TV show because someone told me the producer (or whatever) was a nutjob but if I had to deal with that same nutjob personally I'd probably not watch.

Was he/she a script writer? I get the feeling they got rid of all of them fairly early in the production.....

Short answer: yes. Treated very, VERY badly. My love of Star Wars somehow remains, but boy do I really not like its creator. Stupid no-neck Lucas. I should stop before I go on a Lucas rant (I've already resorted to personal-appearance insults -- quite low, even for me!)...

Ditto on the not-seeing-things-that-frustrate me. Though for me it was more in the sense of "so burned out on [a particular film] that all desire to see it was killed."

I'm a complete hypocrite on this one. I've been known to rail against artist whose personal beliefs are abhorrent to me... yet I'll still watch a Polanski movie or read a Roald Dahl book...

iSm and I have this ongoing discussion about Mel Gibson. I don't watch anything that Gibson is attached to. He's antisemitic and a homophobe. But iSm, the gay Jew, has no problems with him or his films. Go fig.

^^ perfect example. I used to love him, now can't watch anything he's connected with. It a visceral thing...I don't care how well-reviewed some of his stuff might be, I just CAN'T give it a look. Maybe it's how some of us are wired...

I used to enjoy some of his films, but lately? I just can't do it. I'm not sure if his style has changed or if it's because I've seen his public behavior. Either way- I'm no longer a fan.

I agree that works of art ought to be viewed on their own merits, but knowing sordid facts about the creator sometimes puts me off no matter how much I previously liked their work.

Woody Allen creeps me out. I'm indifferent towards Mel Gibson movies (they tend to just not interest me on a story level). I have a hard time watching anything with Tom Cruise in it though due to his public antics.
