Also called (more rarely) a "place Plate", chargers are a decorative plate that sits on the table under the dinner plate. They have generally fallen out of disuse except in the most formal of occasions.

I have a sewing room too. It's also known as the dining room. Of course, the dining room is really a sitting room and the office is also a guest room and my closet.
