But, yeah; he's cute (or she)
The "White" Rhino is actually a misinterpretation of the Afrikaaner name, which, although I'm don't remember the spelling, is pronounced "vight". The word in Afrikaans means "wide" and refers to the shape of the animal's mouth, as opposed to the other prevelent species in Africa, which has a narrow, triangular mouth (with, by the way, a prehensile upper lip!) and is, merely by comparison, known as the "Black" Rhino.

Our black rhino, Pete, is actually one of the sweetest animals I've met. He loves to be petted and scratched behind his ears. He and his mate, Miadi, had a baby named Imara about ten years ago. I got to meet Imara when she was about the size of the one in this picture! What a sweetie!

On a sad note, Miadi passed away about four years ago. Pete was slated by the rhino SSP to get a new mate this month. The new female was en route from Kansas City last week when keepers transporting her noticed her becoming agitated and shaking the truck just outside of Phoenix. They immediately contacted our vet, who contacted the Phoenix Zoo's vet staff. The truck reached the Phoenix Zoo and the staff there was heroic in there efforts to aid the distressed animal. Sadly, the female passed shortly after arriving at the zoo in Phoenix.

This was a young, healthy animal. All precautions, training and protocols were in place for the transport. Keepers transporting her checked on her condition every two hours during the trip, and until they got to Arizona everything was fine. A necropsy will be done to try and determine the cause of death.

Needless to say it was a very sad day at the zoo.

I was watching a show on Bravo when it was interrupted with an Emergency Alert - Child Abduction. It was very odd. Does this happen often?

I dont get interupted, but i dont have cable so its less likely to happen.

Update: surgen says everything is on track and theoretically the numbness in my chin will go away sometime by a year after the surgery... guess I get to get used to it. also, no more dietary restriction from him... so its down to the ortho's restrictions and such which are easy to get around anyway and for the braces and not my jaw

my radio show is alright, kind of stressful when i dont have anyone to interview to fill in my breaks so i just read random copys from the news service we have... I hope to get some interviews and such taped and recorded before the time at the station is done for the semester... though im practically guaranteed a spot for next semester so I can claim i still have a show when needed.

Wow! That is so awesome. I want to pet a rhino. If it wasn't so extremely expensive to do it at the San Diego Zoo, I would have done it in a heartbeat.

I heard about the rhino dying and it broke my heart. But I was picked right back up again when I heard about the newborn.

So this year, my mom handed me a watch that belonged to my grandfather. It's a classy, but not very flashy, piece. I like it a lot. It's comfortable, it looks nice, it's self-winding, and it's in better shape than the watch I had been wearing. So it's become my daily-wear watch.

A conversation last night may prompt me to not wear it so casually. While playing pool, one of the guys in the league asked to look at it. "That's a nice watch, I'm a collector." He didn't really say much beyond that other than to brag about a watch or two in his collection, but it got my wheels turning.

I haven't pinned down exactly the identity, but I did find one site that has what is clearly the same watch on sale for €400 (~$580). That site says it's a 1977 model, haven't found corroboration on that. As a counterpoint, I found one on Ebay selling for ~$90, so perhaps that first one was inflated.

The things I do know are that it's a model line from Omega that's been in existence for a long time (at least the 50s), most of them seem to be worth something, and this particular one appears to be hard to find as those are the only two I've seen online of my specific watch among thousands of other examples of the Seamaster line.

I say - wear it. The enjoyment you'll get from wearing it I think will outweight that that you'll get from looking at it occassionally as it's stored in a drawer.

Did your Grandfather wear it daily? Or was it for special occassions? That might give you some insight as well.

I honestly don't know if he wore it daily. He passed away many years ago, the watch surfaced recently.

And generally I'd agree that I'd rather wear it than sock it away, but I'm kinda rough on my watches, end up banging into things a lot, so I don't want to put this one through that. At the very least I need to stop wearing it daily to work where I'm pretty regularly squeezing my hands into small spaces between metal computer cases and components.

I just literally got sealed into my apartment with plastic sheeting. (They're finally painting our section of the building.)

I suppose it's a good thing I don't have a client meeting this afternoon, considering they didn't even knock on my door and say, "By the way, we're painting your area right now." They just started sealing me in, even though the blinds are open and they looked right at me!

I guess it's a good thing they're painting and not fumigating.
