Baghdad Pups-- Please Read!

Many of our soldiers befriend animals during their tours of duty in Iraq. Military rules prohibit this practice resulting in most "pets" being left behind when soldiers return home. For all of our country's talk about supporting the troops, I personally find it appalling that roadblocks are put in place to help them rescue animals who often are one of the few things keeping them sane in an insane situation.

I know there are lots of animal lovers amongst us here at the LoT...maybe you can help, even if it's just to pass this along.

On a related note, I saw a story about how the military now allows working dogs who have served to be adopted into families also after they are "retired." The dogs all go through extensive screening before they are placed. It's much better than what they used to do, which was euthanize them.

I haven't read the stories yet, but there are so many homeless dogs here. I can't imagine bringing them in from another country.

The choices are to take them here, or leave them to fend for themselves. I can see why they'd want to bring them home.

They are dogs and cats that have been taken in off of the streets of Iraq by servicemen/women and cared for and loved for months, sometimes years during tours of duty. When the servicepeople leave, they are often forced to abandon to the streets their companions whom they have come to love as much as we love our own animals. They have a connection which I cannot even fathom. These animals are their pets they are their family and they are often their sanity.

This isn't an issue of the number of homeless animals here or anywhere else, nor is it a matter of which ones are most deserving of homes...this is a matter of giving a small piece of hope back to these people who have sacrificed so much and to the animals that helped them cope.
