If you're looking for a best friend in desperate situations, the pug might be your safest bet. Bred as a lapdog in Imperial China and introduced to Europe in the 16th century, the pug has a track record of pitching in during tough times. William II's pug, Pompey, is credited with warning the monarch of an impending Spanish attack and saving the Netherlands in the process. Empress Josephine's pug, Fortune, was employed to sneak secret messages under his collar to Napoleon as a way of keeping the Emperor in good spirits while his wife was jailed. Royals have had good luck with the breed, but maybe that's because the dogs forever have the monarchy on their mind. Purebred pugs have a vertical wrinkle on their foreheads that resembles the Chinese character for "prince."
