Well, I will avoid the Oakhurst route primarily because I've been on it a dozen times. I like roads and routes I've never traveled. I don't really care if it takes longer to travel the shorter distance, I will personally enjoy it more.
In fact, there was something somewhere about the 140 being one-way stopped because of some rockslide, or was it some weird crossing of the river? ... anyway, even with delays, I'd rather travel the road less traveled ... by me. Not saying anyone else should do anything in particular. But there's just no denying that one entrance to Yosemite is from the north, one from the west, and one from the south. It seems pretty logical which one would be last on the list for somebody coming fromt the north ... but my advice is no more or less valuable than anyone's. Indeed the SIL who lives in Oakhurst seems a more than reliable source (but, hmmmm, of course she's recommending you travel through Oakhurst). ![]() I really enjoyed Nirvanaman's more direct route vis-a-vis Kings Canyon. It may have taken longer, but it was a shorter distance and far more beautiful. Them's my priorities. Your mileage may vary ... and that phrase is both literal and figurative in this case. |

We too love the road less traveled and take advantage of that frequently with off roading.
[derail] Did you know that the poem The Road Not Taken (that I always remember as The Road Less Traveled) isn't really about that road being the better one? Quote:

iSm, you're kidding about the road still being blocked by the rockslide?? OMG that has been like that for years! I think I read that it would take years...but that was years ago.
It is true, your route will be scenic and it will be your own experience. I do love the river and wish I knew much more about the history of the towns alongside {the towns which are no more}. I think they are old railway towns, to go along with the railroad that once came as far as I don't know towards Yosemite. So much history. Betty, lovely choice of words. Well, definitely, the photos will be wonderful because they will be so varied! I think even the people going have such different perspectives that the photos of the same places they go will be different. Can't wait. And, the weather will only add to the fun. ![]()

Someone posted above (perhaps Alex?) that the 140 was blocked by a rockslide, and there was some kind of rigged-river crossing to avoid that section. I have no idea if that's accurate, or what vintage the alleged rockslide is.
![]() In looking plainly at a map, however, Alex's "recommendation" of a shorter route via the 49 vs. the 99 looks to be half-dozen of one as far as distance. But in fact, the 49 is a smaller road, way more curvy, and goes through even less civilization than Turlock and Merced. So that's the one I'll pick!! Um, there's not even ANY towns along that road, so I hope there are at least gas stations every coupla hundred miles. |

I know of what Alex speaks. I remember the bridge over the rough water part of the river, a single lane bridge, if I am correct. Eh, it wasn't too bad. I don't know where you are getting on the 49 but it is lovely. There are towns, small. China Camp is one, I think. I've seen it on line as having way more than I've ever seen there. An old gas station turned gift shop is on one of the corners you should pass. I will be curious to hear your report as to how these towns are doing during this recession. Breaks my heart to see the closures.
Ha, my husband sent me a photo from that link I posted...we are soooo jealous!! I will be 'sharing' your trip with him.

The rockslide is a few years old (2006 I think). I have no idea if they intend to ever clear it (it was BIG and the canyon wall is unstable, picture here).
It is pretty much a semi-permanent pair of bridges they have set up (way back in the day the road used to be on the other side of the river anyway) to cross over. It isn't a big deal except for being one lane and therefore you can end up waiting 20 minutes for your turn. I didn't mean to say the rockslide was an obstruction, just that I find it something cool to see. Here's more information on the slide, its impacts, and some possible long term plans for a fix. There's even a video of driving over the bypass bridges. |
