I'll gladly put in $5 or $10 or $15 to cover this ... but I still want to know what happened.

I don't see anything wrong with a bill for 24 people being split into smaller and far more manageable segments. If Kevy and Susan ended up on two separate bills, that's a fault of the restaurant and nothing to do with the concept of splitting the check up into easier bits.

I assume that incidence of double-billing is not the cause of this particular problem. But was that the only double billing, or might there have been more of that sort of thing?

It's semi-confusing having 2 threads dealing with this subject, but I'm reiterating my request to find out if there was a shortage across several of the checks, or if there was one check that was entirely unpaid.

And it seems to me if everyone's just throwing in what they think is their share of an $800 tab, to be figured by 24 people, it's a lot easier for shortages than if everyone has to contribute their portion of a $150 tab, and only has to figure it with 3 other people to arrive at the proper total with generous tip.

But whatever. Keith suggested the separate checks and it worked very well for us. I could see clearly our bill was paid, and that the tip was not as hefty as I'd like ... so I was able to throw a little more money at it. I'm sorry if other groupings did not find that as convenient or were somehow negligent.

I don't think separate checks were the problem, but that they didn't do it as they said they would, or in any logical way whatsoever. Many if not most couples were split on 2 checks. It was just a mess.

Doesn't really matter what happened, for $5 a person, problem is solved and our good friend Kevy isn't f'd again.

Done deal. Solid.

BTW, I really like the Aussie method of bills. Tip and tax included in the price of the food. No calculating necessary. Nice and clean.

While it's been quite some time since I worked for tips, I still perfer the merit method. Building a flat rate into the bill kills all incentive to better service. I always made more than my contemporaries becuase I gave a damn (or at least gave that impression) and it showed.

As a customer I like being able to increase or withold tip amounts based on service.

I dunno - the Italian method is similar (coperto/servizio included in your total) and we've rarely had service in the US like we found in Italy, regardless of whether the establishment was a little bar or a fancy osteria. I think the key is for the employers to pay the servers well, and make it their absolute responsibility to be of good service, or find a new job.

(Or maybe just to be Italian.)

I agree that setting up something standard for bill-paying would be a great idea. This has happened too often. Maybe it's something as simple as always getting a single bill, electing the evening's "accountant" and not letting any party members leave without the accountant's sign-off.

I was talking to KS last night and we were thinking that a good way to make sure the bill is always covered is as the bill goes around people should initial their food/drinks and then write down (on the back) what they are putting in.

Since it shouldn't be discussed in this thread (IMO), I have created a separate thread to discuss the dinner bill fiasco.
